National Insurance?

Sorry if this question has been asked before. We're thinking of hiring a nanny and are trying to work out all the costs.

We've discussed the gross salary but when talking to NannyTax they're saying that National Insurance is an extra separate cost to us. So for example, if the gross salary was $23,000 per annum then the approximate £2K extra for national insurance is something we pay on top. I'm guessing this is correct as I've seen it mentioned elsewhere but wanted to double check. Is it different to other jobs as I've always paid NI out of my gross salary so trying to understand why it's something additional when employing a nanny?

Hopefully it's not a stupid question, we're just trying to ensure we're understanding everything correctly and not missing any hidden costs.

There's employee NI which comes out of the gross wage and Employer NI which you pay.

www.mranchovy.com/calc/ helps show the figures. Select 2013/14 tax year.
