Nanny appraisals

In my work for large companies i have carried out many of these with the employee filling in a form self-evaluating, then a sit down, adding comments from me and signoff. How do people handle it with their nannies. It is coming up to the end of the first year, overall she's great. I will give her a pay rise. There are a couple of small things I'd like to mention.

I do not think doing a self evaluation form is worth while. Just have a chat over a Brew and maybe present things as a sandwich, good-bad-good.

The things that are not so great can't be that major if you are not raising them till now, so it's not like a written warning or anything like that.

Document the pay rise by attaching a short note to the contract, so you can look back in future to know what date it applied from and what was agreed.

This can also be done using the original job description or ad if you have one, chatting over each point using it as a prompt. While the form may sound too formal, I do think a review like this is very valuable and unfortunately rare for a nanny. It's a great idea to outline the positives officially and will give her a chance to raise any issues also.

Thanks. I think the sandwich idea and running through the contract is a good idea. I don't want to be too formal but i do think an annual appraisal is a good idea.

i had an appraisal once. was terrified Grin. we had it over a cuppa sat at the table and she told about how great i am and stuff and asked me to list my good and bad points about myself and i said about how hard it is to talk about myself and she looked shocked and said really? i do this every 6 months at work.. yes, well im sure people who work in offices are use to that kind of stuff, so she probably never thought that a person who works in a home might not have the same formalities Grin. it was fine though and the rest of the ones were did were more informal yearly reviews, any problems that needed airing, pay rise etc.
i got my own back once when i had a problem and asked for a meeting and she looked terrified, you could tell she thought i was about to quit-i wasnt Grin

My boss and I just had a chat whilst charge was distracted by the iPad! I was expecting a formal appraisal at the one year point, forgot and then ended up having the conversation.

It was nice to have it sprung on me and I preferred that to a formal sit down and chat thing! But then my employers and I are very open about any issues as and when they arise as I learnt from a previous job where I didn't have the confidence to do that that it needs to be sorted immediately and not dwelled on.

If there it's something you want to bring up just have a chat about it, otherwise out just becomes too formal imo.
