Nanny employers - worried about RTI?

Maybe you don't know what Real Time Information is, but if you employ a nanny it is going to affect you from 6th April 2013.

One of the big changes is that you (or your payroll provider) must make a report to HMRC on or before the day you make any payment to your nanny (except reimbursement of expenses), including a calculation of tax and NI due.

But HMRC have announced today that for 6 months only, if you employ fewer than 50 staff you don't have to make that report until the end of the tax month (which is always on the 5th of the month).

Is that going to help? Not really, unless you pay your nanny a net wage (which is not a good idea anyway) depending on how many hours she works up to the day of payment.

Is there any problem for the nanny if the employers don't do this? If they don't make a report or make one late or something?

MrAnchovy · 19/03/2013 23:55

No. As long as a report for the final payment in the tax year is made eventually, the nanny's NI record and Income Tax account will be adusted correctly. If HMRC's system works.

Will payroll agencies like the one I use, PAYE for Nannies, do this kind of thing for me (you're going to tell me I need to ask them, aren't you??)

MrAnchovy · 20/03/2013 00:13

Yes, I'm surprised they haven't told you about it, although there shouldn't be much change to the way you work with them.

I use Paye for nannies ant all the RTI info was in the first pack of info I got.

Its slightly annoying for me as we don't have a nanny at the moment, so I have to submit nil returns monthly (or get fined for not doing so). Even though HMRC are aware i have no employees.
We will have someone from december this year (as I'm going back to work) so its not worth deregistering.

Thank you MrA and fufu - I've been with them a while so can't remember what they sent me - I am sure they have it all in hand!
