Hi have been childminding for a few months now, have two after school places, so i put an advert in my local school. Had a call from another childminder warning me off a parent she has just finished minding. The lady she warned me of has now called me and coming to visit tom!! Do you think its a good idea for me to take them on? Thanks

Why was the other minder warning you?
Non -payment?
Badley behaved?

jellyjelly · 02/05/2006 14:38

dEPENDS on what the other minder said was the reason for her leaving? Give us a clue about what she said and you might be able to pre empth the problem by changing something.

Late payments, the child, hours etc need details

Great Minds think alike or fools seldom differ?

boo70 · 02/05/2006 14:45

Hi yes the other childmnder said the oldest child hit a younger child on two occasions and she told me she has reported the school as she thinks they bully her children, lots of bits really. This chilminder also told me of a previous childminder who had probs with this family.

Might you be busy/full/have the wrong days

Sounds like hard work

Maybe offer a long trail/settling in period

Ofer her a 2 stricks and you're out deal?

boo70 · 02/05/2006 14:47

tell her you ahve been alerted of concerns reg her child/children and ask her to be honest about problems so you can make a clear descision and adjust settling periods accordingly?/..hope you get it sorted+

BradfordMum · 02/05/2006 17:47

oh, don't think that's a good idea EvesMama.

it puts the previous childminder in a difficult situation and the Mum may complain about confidentiality.

Katymac · 02/05/2006 17:53

I agree with Bradfordmum - You mustn't breech confidentiality

But you could say you've had a problem with your children being bullied/hit in the past and that's why you need the "2 strikes and you're out" policy?

boo70 · 02/05/2006 18:25

Yes that sounds good, thanks for all the advice.

This happened to me. I told the childminder I appreciated the warning but I would still interview the parent & make up my own mind.

I didn't tell the parent about the warning but asked about why they were leaving the childminder (interesting to hear the other side of the story!). I emphasised that I always start with a trial period - if the girls didn't get on with the other mindies I would cancel the agreement.

boo70 · 03/05/2006 13:31

Thanks alya that is what i am going to do the lady and her two children are coming today, i think i will start with a trail period though. Let you know how it goes!!!!!

Hi meet the family and signed contracts on a trail basis, she was not best pleased with short term arrangments but told her thats i do things!! The children were really polite and well behaved and all went ok.Went to drop my own daughter at school this morning and two other mums came up to me and warned me off this family again, really worried now as signed contracts and pick them both up today after school.Dont know if i have done the right thing as so many people have warned me about them!!!

how did you get on today?

ThePrisoner · 04/05/2006 22:50

How long a trial basis have you said? Basically, if there is any problem whatsoever within that time-frame, then you can say, "thankyou, but no thankyou."
