Would any childminder consider this job? What are my other options?

Ok, it's a while away but i'm just trying to think through what my childcare options are for when my DS starts pre-school in August. He will have just turned 3.

Pre-school will be 12:30-3pm. Although i work three days a week I will only need childcare for after pre-school one night a week (Tuesday) from 3pm-6pm. So the childminder would collect from pre-school and i would collect him from her at 6pm.

My question is am I likely to find a childminder willing to take a 3 hour a week contract? I've asked a couple of local childminders (also friends) who have said they would consider the contract as:
A) It's too much paperwork for 3 hours a week of work
B) It doesn't give enough time to bond with the child

If a childminder isn't going to be an option what other options would i have? We wouldn't need any extra cover during the holidays i'd still only be looking for 3pm-6pm every tuesday.

Thank you for your help. This is my first post of MN so be kind, and sorry if i've left out any information.

i wouldn't, but thats not to say no childminder will. You can only ask. You will robably have to pay a higher hourly rate though and you may find a cm won't do it for long as they would rather give the place to someone wanting more than one afternoon.
Could you look for an older, grandparent type person? or a student? mum with own baby? Maybe try gumtree or childcare.uk?

I would do it if it fitted in with others, as reet said, try childcare.co.uk, you might find your child doesn't settle well though

Why don't you see if any of the pre-school staff would like a few extra hours work? They'll all be CRB checked and your son will hopefully get to know them from pre-school.

I would I have 2 different children for 4 hours a week each and both have been fine settling in, all you can do is ask someone may only have one afternoon free so would suit them.

Thanks everyone. It looks like I might have a tough time finding someone. My DP is doing one pick up, MIL another and I'll do two days when I'm off work. Just leaving one day uncovered. Only other family nearby is my SIL who would do it but she has her own DS to pick up and the same time at another preschool 1.5miles away.

Wouldn't the problem with an older person/another parent be that they would need to be registered?

Would it make a difference if I was also looking for a place for baby DC2 (not conceived yet though) for 1pm-6pm. Or does that complicate things even more. Just trying to weigh up all the options.

I've no worries about him settling as he's being going to private nursery since 10months old and a local crèche and creche on holiday and settles well.

If you find a CM who gives the 15 free hrs, you could use your CM for every afternoon ???? Just an alternative choice to consider.

Leave him in preschool for the rest of the afternoon?

Emily7708 · 19/02/2013 22:44

If your SIL is willing to do it, can't she just pick your DS up from preschool 15-30 mins early that day so she will still have time to collect her own child?
