What type of work is a nanny expected to do?
Look after the children. Take them to school, collect them.
Take children on outings. Assist with homework.
Play games, playdough.
Cooking - for the children, plus as an activity such as making cakes.
Laundry - the children's, sometimes adults as well.
Parents expectations will vary, so it's something that parents should think about and come up with a job description which they then discuss with job applicants.
Tell me about live in/live out nannies
They either live at their place or work, or they don't.
Is there such a thing as a nanny who works nights?
I suppose there could be, if they had time off during the day and were able to sleep during the day if they had been up a lot during the night due to children not sleeping. A NightNanny is something you can get, it's more a maternity nurse who does nights only... often caring for newborn twins/triplets.
How much per hour is a nanny paid?
It varies. £10 gross an hour is not unusual outside of cities. Higher in cities.
If you do employ a nanny what do you have to pay on their behalf?
You need to operate PAYE... so you deduct Employee Income Tax and you deduct Employee National Insurance, both of which you transfer to HMRC. As the employer you pay Employers National Insurance. Statutory payments would apply, such as SSP, SMP, Redundancy Pay.
If you have an au pair do they have to speak a good level of english arlready?
Wouldn't an au-pair be here mainly to learn the language? Their level of english language could vary. If you need them to be able to speak a good level of english, interview them verbally... video chat via Skype can be useful as you can see and hear them.
