NNEB student placements - anybody had experience?

A friend tells me that nneb and other child care students from the local college need two day placements with preschool children and babies in local homes.
They are not left unsupervised but are there as an extra pair of hands. (More time for me to be on MN!!)
Anyone tried this? What do you reckon?

I did this when i was a student, and yes as you say, i was an extra pair of hands for the Mum.

I think it will be the luck of the draw, you'll either get someone you get on well with and find helpful, or vice versa.
But either way, hopefully you'll be able to teach them a thing or two! Smile

Thanks hattie - I'm really tempted. Would this be the wrong time of year to do it though?

I don't know tbh, our class used to be split into three groups, and each would do a different placement each term iyswim.

Could be worth a try, i know that many people struggled to find home placements.

btw i ended up babysitting for my family - could be an extra bonus for you Wink

yes i'd go for it.

when I trained as a NNEB I only had work experience in a nursery or day nursery. Working alongside a mum would have been great experience as I went onto work as a sole charge nanny.

only downside I can imagine would be the trainee being used as an unpaid babysitter/dogs body (please don't think I mean you'd do this tallmummy, I mean in general). This would be a brilliant chance for a mum to pass on some wisdom as opposed to all the learning coming out of a book.

My Mum did her NNEB in her forties and did her in-home placement with a friend of hers who had just had a baby... very funny as this was her friends first baby and my Mum has 4 children so the knowledge was being passed the other way! Both my Mum and her friend really enjoyed the placement and got a lot out of it.

I did this for a lovely family in 1996-1997 as part of my NNEB, the Mum was fantastic and never once did i feel i was being used!! If anything she was looking for advice from me, arghhhh throw me in at the deep end!! Both boys were lovely and i had a great time! I made the babies bottles up, played with them, we went for outings all together, and from time to time even now we still see each other in passing!! Go for it!! I have nannied since 1998 and i now have my own baby aged 8mths, and i have always said when (if) we have baby number two i would definately welcome a childcare student, as it is great for both sides and i feel was the reason i went into nannying! Good Luck! x

Yes i should have added - i started babysitting for my family after i had finished my placement and we had built a relationship - and they obviously considered me trustworthy Smile

As a registered childminder I have had students on placement with me for the last three years, I usually get them for a term at a time for 2 days a week, with one or two 'block' weeks in that time. They are usually first year students completing either their Certificate in Childcare Practice or the 1st year of Diploma in Childcare Practice.
One of the DCE students now comes back to me & babysits occasionally & is going onto uni in Sept to do a teaching degree. She will be brilliant at that.

nutcracker · 25/04/2006 12:56

I did this as a student for a childminder.

It was my best placement, I got on really well with the family and became their babysitter too.

I was basically an extra pair of hands but it worked really well for both of us.

nutcracker · 25/04/2006 12:57

I am still friends with them now.

tallmummy · 25/04/2006 20:11

It sounds like it might work for us. The criteria seemed to be a preschooler and a baby.
It would be great to have someone play with and do activities with ds3 whilst I do ds4's physio and stuff. Would ds4's sn make a difference though or do most childcare courses cover sn?

Not sure about last question but just wanted to add a caveat - I looked into this at one point but was put off by the fact that you have no choice about who you get at my local college. I at least wanted the chance to meet one or two and make a choice.

Yes experience with children with special needs will be a bonus tall mummy.

when i did my nneb many moons ago, we had the choice to do a placement in special needs schools, it was a popular choice and not everyone got to do it as there just weren't enough places.

I had one: she started off OK - willing to do what I asked, but ended up so unreliable that I asked her not to bother telling me she was coming unless she was actually going to turn up.

I'd definitely do it again though - some of the students are super, and I may get luckier.

chezbabe101 · 26/04/2006 21:45

I did a home placement in my 1st year NNEB, was great, became a great friend and she gave me my 1st nanny job when I left college :)

red37 · 26/04/2006 22:04

4 students came to my house, they spent a week each, they were all lovely.
They made feeds for baby, fed my 18 month old her lunch, played with them, i found it a huge help.
I still see the girls from time to time.
They are aged 10 & 11 now.
