Would you stay open if your child has chest infection?

Hello, I'm a childminder and my daughter has a chest infection. Doctor has prescribed antibiotics and she seems ok (a bit tired due to lack of sleep) would you keep your setting open?
Thanks
Hollie

If it was caused by a virus like a bad cold then I would consider taking one day without other children as she will still be contagious. If the other children have already been exposed to it, then I'd stay open. The main concern I think is if she is still contagious.

She never had a cold/flu,it just started with a terrible cough a day or 2 before we went to the doctors.

Looked at the "guidance on infection control in schools and other childcare settings" from the department of health, and it doesn't mention chest infection at all.......? So I'm assuming its not classed as infectious and therefore I'm ok to open????

Unless you have a particularly susceptible child I wouldn't worry.

I used to get them as a teen, no one else in the house, even my chain smoking DDad ever caught them.

Oh this is interesting. there's a child in ds's class with chest infection apparently - on antibiotics but in school.

I don't understand - last time I had one it was horrendous. Do they affect children differently?

She has a terrible cough at night but it seems to get better during the day, she is participating in activities and seems ok (except tired)

i didnt think chest infections were contagious

and again as with most illness's, they are contagious BEFORE the event, ie the pox and S&D so likely if contagious then all would get the infection iyswim

ReetPetit · 29/01/2013 15:33

I would offer the parents the option - but not charge if they decided not to use me.

ImNotaPheasantPlucker · 29/01/2013 15:35

As reet says , I would give parents the option to bring their children, or not

I'd have a temperature, aching ribs and feel horrible in an evening, but be OK during the day. Carried on for ages before I went to the doctors the first time.

Can't remember if I had a cough, I always had a cough in winter. Possibly mild asthma like DD1, chain smoking DDad or both combined. Drs. Just doled out cough medicine back then.

Thanks for everyone who posted back and for all your advice, I think I'll call tomorrow and give option ( thanks reetpetit) I've only been registered since July 12' so it's all a bit new to me!
Thanks again everyone!
