Now these are going to sound like ridiculous questions to a lot of you but please humour me.
What is the main difference between a nanny and childminder?
How much would you expect to pay for two afternoons a week for two toddlers at my own house, no pick up or drop off, just entertaining them, giving a bit of a snack and possible trip to park.
Thank you so much.

A nanny goes to your home and a childminder has your children in her home.
Price depends on the area where you live and the person e.g. age, experience, qualifications.

Prices round me - nanny £8 p.hr childminder £3.50-4.50 p.hr.

A childminder provides a service to many families, who take their child/children to the childminders home. The childminder runs their own business and thus dictates the terms of business.

A nanny works solely for the parents and comes to the child/children's home. Parents are the nannies employers and dictate what happens during working hours.

So you could say it is about level of control and about where the care takes place.

Question: who would only want to work 2 afternoons a week?

I do not think that is going to be very attractive a job to many people, though it might suit someone. It may suit a student if it fitted with lectures but lecture times/days can change. It may suit someone with their own child/children but the hours would need to fit with school collection, school term time, or you would need to be happy for them to bring their child/children with them.

In addition to what has already been posted, a nanny is paid per family/per job whereas a childminder charges per child.

SavoyCabbage · 26/01/2013 20:14

You might find someone older to do the job you mentioned in your op.

what you describe is a babysitter. you might find a student willing to do it or alternatively a mum with own baby/toddler...
