I haven't been a CM for long and was speaking to another CM the other day who said we are not allowed to administer Calpol even with parents permission. Is this correct? If so, is there any written guidance from Ofsted that I can show my parents to prove this is the case. Thank you in advance.

I give calpol but get permission before even if just a text to prove you have permission and always get them to sign after to say they know you've given it. Unless I've missed a change?

On the last First Aid Course I attended they were very anti Calpol and saying it is badly over-used (I understand recommended doses have also recently been cut) and that its use for non-specific ailments can mask symptoms of serious illness developing and delay treatment. I now say I will administer prescription medication only (with parent's permission in writing and obviously only for non-contagious illness). Doctors can still prescribe painkillers if they judge them appropriate.

as long as you have prior written permission you can give calpol or any other medicine. as part of the children's paper work when they first start the parents sign a permission to administer medication form which I ask them to up-date every 6 months. The name, dose and time of dose is then entered into my accident and incidence book for the parent to sign at pick-up time. they are then given a carbon copy of the entry

As long as you have prior written consent & there is a clear health reason for the medicine then yes you can, although you don't have to. Ofsted have just reissued their guidance www.ofsted.gov.uk/resources/factsheet-childcare-giving-medication-children-registered-childcare that makes what you can/can't do clearer

What the others said. I too give Calpol but only with written permission for non-prescription medicine beforehand and specific permission (by text or email) for every dose. The parent then signs the incident book where I record the times of doses and how much it was. The parent also supplies the Calpol.
