I am looking at doing a short 10 week course. It's once a week and I'd need childcare for DS3 (DD12 would also be around but not need much care). The hours are 4-9pm.

I'm guessing a babysitter would be fine but what should I offer to pay for this?

I've looked at a couple of agencies and they are much more expensive then I thought they would be. I am on a very tight budget just now but will make some short term sacrifices if it means a healthier looking CV in the long run but at this rate the childcare is double what the course costs and some!

Should it be an hourly rate or should I just offer something for the evening. I've never done this before so a bit confused really!

Where are you located? You may have luck getting someone retired or a student to do it, maybe put an ad in your local shop? The cost would depend on your location and the kind of person you get- I charge £10 an hour for babysitting (or negotiate a lower rate for regular work) but I'm a qualified nanny in London. When I was studying childcare, in a much poorer area, I'd have charged £3 an hour!

Oh and take a look at your local Gumtree, childcare.co.uk as mentioned above, greatcare, nannyjob

Hi - I am in the brighton area but thanks for the offers :)

I've put an ad on gumtree and had loads of replies - mainly from students which is fine by me. Most of them seem to have recent CRBS and refs too.

But I have no idea what to offer payment wise!

When I last used a babysitter, about a year ago, I paid £7/h to an off-duty nursery worker. Maybe offer a bit less per hour if they're not qualified?
