If she is available to mind, the you should pay. If she is not, then you don't IYKWIM.

However all CM's do it differently.

Mine doesn't charge for her hols, for bank holidays etc. But she charges for our hols unless they are at the same time as hers.

I charge for 50 weeks of the year...whether or not I work

I take 2 weeks holidy and all bank holidays

Each childminder will decide his or her own holidays - but it is recommended (by National C/M association) that they charge 52 weeks and all bank holidays

NCMA recommends we charge for 4 weeks paid holiday

crunchie · 13/04/2006 21:10

katymac, but realistically most CM I know charge you when you are away, but not when they are. That means if they are taking the bank holidays off, they don't charge.

My CM takes all BH off, and doesn't charge. She doesn't charge for her 4 weeks (or 20 days) holiday. But does charge (maybe half I am not sure) for our holidays.

She also does mad things like takes them all to the zoo and buys them presents even though you make her promise not to - as she hands me the Easter eggs she bouht for mine (she also does christmas/birthday pressies!!!) I HAVE to go get her a plant and an egg now :)

I think it depends on your attitude....my mindees all went home with Lindt Bunnies this week and Father Christmas gave out 24 presents last Christmas Party......but I'm fairly professional about fees/holidays etc - I need the money

Happy - I agree with you but people don't think of you but of themselves!!!
I get this as a birth doula sometimes... they want to book a birth doula, they want all the support, the visits and the calls but if they don't call you for the birth they somehow expect not to pay you!!!!! as you didn't do the birth (it's a different matter if the doula is herself unable to attend- that's unprofessional).
It also happens if they have their babies very quickly and the doula didn't have a chance to get there..... they forget we were on-call and fundamentally didn't book another client !
Luckily it's not a common scenario but i certainly do get the question!

My CM charges half price for her 4 weeks hols and I am entitled to take 4 weeks hols at half price so I suppose that works out the same as what others have said. Any sick days or odd days I still have to pay. If she is sick (she never has been but had a week off when her Mum died) then I don't pay. Do Tues to Thurs so BHs not that much of an issue.

Daisymae · 13/04/2006 21:25

I think most childminders would not be able to afford 8 weeks holidays without pay for that period!
I charge for bank holidays if I'm due to mind that day as parents will be paid for Bank Holidays.
As for holidays, I charge for any holidays they take as I can't expect to find a mindee for 1 or 2 weeks. I make no charge for time off that I take when they may have to pay for another minder/carer. I take 2 one-week breaks, and may have another week in odd days over a 12 month period. We all have lives outside work don't we? Even childminders and might need to go to funerals or hopefully weddings, that increasingly take place mid-week. Childminding can be very tiring and I feel that I do a better job if I feel refreshed and reinvigorated (Not by the funerals though).
All of the above is set out in my contract and should be discussed before signing rather causing resentment down the line. I don't know what a nursery's policy would be?

Bozza · 13/04/2006 21:26

Agree, don't you have a contract starsq.

Daisymae · 13/04/2006 23:21

All gone to bed for refreshment and reinvigoration??Wink

I do charge for Bank Holidays even though I am not available to work but usually offer a half day, free of charge, to 'compensate' providing I have the space available.

I don't expect parents to pay me while I am on holiday or if I am sick but do expect parents to pay full fees if they are absent for any reason!

tron · 14/04/2006 11:39

my CM doesn't charge for her hols or bank holidays. if she's available and we don't use her she charges half rate - i think this is really generous as previous cm charghed full rate for her hols, took all of them and then handed in her notice
