Why use a nanny agency?

I always fancied running my own agency but after a (miniscule) bit of research I am wondering what nanny agencies do that savvy parents can't? Apart from being able to provide CRB checks, what can they do that a parent who educates themselves about the recruitment, vetting and interview processes can't do? Why would a parent pay fees when they can do everything themselves? What little secrets do nanny agencies have?

Reference checks, advertising, shortlisting - parents can do that. Contracts, interview questions, Ofsted registration - all the information is out there for parents to find out for free on sites like this and Nannyjob. There is always somebody to guide you to the right place for payroll info. Plus as a parent you still have to check the references out yourself anyway.

The majority of nannies I know advertise themselves privately as well as registering with agencies, and nannies get limited back-up from the agencies they register with if things go pear-shaped.

I might come across as negative towards agencies - I'm not, as I said I've always quite fancied having a go at it myself, but then so have a lot of nannies judging by the amount of agencies I see being advertised nowadays.

It can save the parents the hassle of interviewing various nannies. An agency may just send one applicant - the person the agency feels is best for the job - so the parents just interview one person. No need for the parents to compare applicants as the agency have already narrowed it down.

Having paid £5k in agency fees in 23 months (3 nannies who all went back to their home countries) I felt the same. Recruited our current excellent nanny off of Gumtree. Took about 2days of my time in total, so good value, and very Pleased with my decision. Sorry nanny agencies - won't be back!

"No need for the parents to compare applicants as the agency have already narrowed it down."

But is that really worth paying over a thousand pounds in fees?

'I am wondering what nanny agencies do that savvy parents can't?'

The answer is nothing. Nanny agencies are targeted at;

the very wealthy - can easily afford fees and have the attitude 'why do it yourself when you can pay someone else to do it?' You could clean your own house, but still nice to have a cleaner!

the anxious - agencies feed on parents' anxieties about leaving their children and finding the right person to leave them with. There was a thread here a couple of weeks ago started by someone who runs an agency scaremongering about Gumtree/private advertising.

the lazy/busy - can't be bothered/don't have time to do it themselves.

' so the parents just interview one person'

I cannot believe that anyone would not bother to speak with/look at CV's for/meet more than one person when hiring a nanny. I don't think there is any job where they just accept the first/only candidate without seeing who else is out there.

I agree the agencies are for the anxious or cash rich/time poor.

It's a bit of a false economy as parents shouldn't always be verifying ID, qualifications, checks and references anyway. It just saves you scanning CVs but you get very good at that!

gencies have changed over the years and now-a-days I don't rate many of them.

I used to get most of my jobs through a lovely local agency and felt really sad when they closed due to retirement. The two ladies that ran it always went the extra mile to send the right nanny to the right family and were as careful of their nannies as their employers. result; happy employment on both sides. I've found my local branch of tigerlily very good but a lot of the agencies don't do much for their money.

Meybe your agency will be a good one.
