Nannies - is this a reasonable rate for a live-in nanny?

Background: am considering employing a family member (not immediate family), who is a qualified nanny, from Jan; want to do it all properly so am looking at all the things I need re: contract, PAYE, holiday entitlement, etc. and need to agree on pay.

I was thinking of a gross salary of £23k-£25k, i.e. £350-£375 net per week.

In terms of hours, absolute max would be a 60-hour week, over 5 days - but in practice, as my husband regularly works shifts, she would probably end up averaging more like 45-50 hours a week, and quite often she would have 3 days off a week. There would be limited need for evening babysitting, maybe only 2 or 3 times a month, and obviously if this was during a period when she was working 60-hour week, I wouldn't expect any evening work at all.

DC1 (5) is at school so for most of the day she would have sole charge of DC2 who is 3, who would probably be in pre-school in the mornings. She would have her own smallish double room, but have to share bathroom with rest of the family, and could have personal use of car at weekends. We're in Buckinghamshire.

She is college-qualified with a couple of years full-time nanny experience and has lived in before.

Does this sound reasonable in terms of salary? Too much/too little? Am very new to this!

Also one final question, she's from the States, although has UK passport as was born here and both parents from here, so am assuming no issues re. legalities of working here - but any advice most gratefully received, as I say, want to make sure all above board!

Thanks so much for your help.

I think that sounds very reasonable. It's quite generous if she's only doing 40 hours, but needs to be to cover the times when she is working longer hours.

yep - - fair salary

So long as you average less than 50 hours a week, then that sounds OK-ish - although £7 net an hour, is right at the lower end of the scale. If it were me I would offer it as a 50 hour a week + 1 nights babysitting job per week, with a proviso that if she works more than 50 weeks on average in any calendar month then she gets paid extra at the end of that month as overtime (eg if she does 60 one week but 40 the next she doesn't get overtime, but 60 then 50 would give her 10 hours overtime).

The only risk with paying slightly below the odds is that she might leave you for a better paid role, but I imagine the risk is low for you because you will no doubt be treating her very well as a family member.

No problem with UK passport - you will need to take her to a job centre to apply for an NI number, then register as an employer for tax purposes. At £375 a week you will need to pay an extra £100 weekly on top in tax (go to listentotaxman.com to do your own calcs)
