I've hired a live in Mothers Help - what legalities are required?

I've just hired a lovely girl to help us with our DSs. She's very experienced and has worked for 3 other families and was at one family for 3 years. She is not attending any language classes, but may commence her PHD in due course.

Am I to provide a contract for both of us? I've Googled the topic and have seen some generic contracts for language studying au pairs. Should I tweak one of these to suit her and us?

i usually use the nannyjob template contract, with added things that the family likes to ad.
if you are paying over the NI and/or tax threshold , then you will need to register an an emplyer with inland revenue and pay the tax/NI on your and her behalf.
nannyjob website and inland revenue website should explain how to to all this.
good luck

You need to give her a contract/statement of employment specifying hours/duties/holidays (5.6 weeks paid)/sick pay/notice periods etc - there is some info on the direct.gov.uk website about this. Plus make sure you are deducting her tax/NI appropriately and giving her payslips.

You will need to register as an employer and do all the tax stuff, as well as writing a formal contract. Has she given you her P45 from her last job?
