What's ok for an au pair?

Would it be ok to ask an au pair to do one day a week (7 hours) sole charge with my 18 month DS, one day mostly in charge (6 hours although I work from home that day so can help), one night babysitting and one morning lie in for us? I'm trying to work out if it would work for us.

All opinions gratefully received.

Oh and is £75 a week plus room, meals and shared use of car about right for that?

So so you only need the au pair to work 2 days a week (13h) plus one morning and one night babysitting?

Yes that's right. But one of those days they'd be by themselves (from 9-5). What do you think?

Will depend on the person, some you may feel confident to leave in charge of your child, others you might not leave them to look after a dog. So when looking for an au-pair, check check and check again about their childcare experience - experience they have looking after younger siblings, experience they may have of looking after non-related children, experience helping youth groups, all that sort of thing.

Have you worked from home and had someone be in your house looking after your son? Working from home can work but it can take a bit of getting used to for everyone involved, as it may be unclear at first who is responsible for what. If your DS is upset who does he go to, the au-pair, or to you?

lots of experienced aupairs would love a job like that. you just need to find someone who has cared for toddlers for extended periods of time before and speaks good enough english.

Thanks both. Seems like it might be the way forward. Take your point about working from home. Would have to set some ground rules I guess.
