Hi I 'm posting for a non MN friend - any suggestions on how to find the above, she has 2 school age children. My friend needs someone from 8-6, 5 days a week, who would need to take the children to school and collect them, also cook their evening meal and entertain them after school. Whilst they are at school they would clean the house and wash and iron and generally take care of the house. (They are a tidy family, so house is kept nicely, not trashed and left for her to tidy up)
The lady that she has at the moment isn't a qualified nanny, I think my friend would just like a nice person who can do the above. Also they could only take holiday at the same time as the family, but she would be given lots of notice)
She pays around £10 per hour and then pays her tax and NI on top. (£2000 per month tax free)
Is this an OK job for the money?

yes it does sound a good job to someone who is happy to clean - problem is many qual/professional nannies dont want to do housework

why is the lady leaving who is there now?

you say she just wants a nice person, as money doesnt seem to be an object - as salary is good - then i would say your friend is better off looking for a nwoc to be on call and work same hours but can do things with her own child and earn less an hour and then get a cleaner

holiday at the same time may put some nannies off, it would me, i go away when kids are at school as 1) cheaper and 2) dont want lots of kids while im away

and tell your friend to discuss and agree a gross wage

Hatties Nannies is an agency I have used to find work in the Farnham area. They are based near Godalming.

If your friend has internet and they want to self recruit they could look on www.childcare.co.uk www.nannyjob.co.uk www.gumtree.com/guildford

snowdon nick????? wow :)

Not everyone wants to work 50 hours a week. May be worth considering two part time housekeepers, or combo of nanny and cleaner.
How old are the children?

nannynick · 30/07/2012 13:38

Free WiFi up here and coffee at a reasonable £1.95
Now to walk back down, good couple of hours down the Miners path.

£10net seems quite a lot to me for the area, when I nannied in Rowledge I didn't get that much.
So if she is not getting applicants it isn't due to salary but maybe due to it being more a cleaning & ironing role during a large part of the day.
Where has she tried advertising so far. If on rowledge side of farnham an ad in the spar shop in rowledge village may find someone local.

The children are 9 & 6, the lady who is there currently isn't working out. She moans about having to do the cleaning and ironing if it's too hot, but the real problem is she has slagged off my friend to some of the mums at the school gate and is just a negative person to be around.

I just don't think there are many ways you can make the prospect of doing 20+ hours of housework (plus cooking) per week terribly appealing.

Idohaveoneofthese · 30/07/2012 19:56

I know it's not most people's first choice, but £1600 a month tax free is quite good and better than stacking shelves isn't 't it?

As I said it's a good wage but obv struggling to get candidates so she needs to look at other options and a nanny for £8 nett but obv gross up saves £80 a week enough for a cleaner

nannynick · 30/07/2012 20:46

Its not tax free, its take home pay. Employee income tax and NI is being DEDUCTED by the employer and paid to HMRC on behalf of the employee.

The money isn't the issue here I feel, there is something else. Maybe local people just don't want that sort of work. Maybe the location is hard to get to.

Is it a lack of applicants or a lack of suitable applicants?
What about the existing employee, have they resigned or are they on final warning to improve?

nbee84 · 30/07/2012 20:48

And consider what happens during the school holidays - is the nanny expected to look after the children and still get the housekeeping duties done?

Idohaveoneofthese · 30/07/2012 21:25

My friend pays her tax and NI on top of her take home.
Not sure exactly what the deal is during the holidays, there could be more flexibility and I know that the DS does lots of sports things for a full day.
She hasn't really looked around for new applicants, I think my friend likes to keep life stable for her kids and has been hoping that the lady would just behave the same way as she did for the first few months.

Actually nick quite a lol of housekeeping jobs pay that sort of money but as mentioned not all nannies are interested in housekeeping jobs but it can work out if employer and employee are right for each other.
