Ah now, there are so many variables

Chain type nurseries, with high staff turnover, maybe, maybe not

Stand-alones, yeah maybe, depending on the vibe/ethos, maybe not

Also things like : other options available/cost implications/parental feelings all involved

I don't think you could state a blanket yay or nay in truth

iluvkids · 19/07/2012 13:59

yes, but only part time and a small nursery.

HolyCameraConfusionBatman · 19/07/2012 14:03

No I wouldn't (unless I had to go back to work and it was the only option).

I would send them to a pre-school for a few hours each day from 2.5/3 years old though.

nannynick · 19/07/2012 14:19

Some nurseries I have temped in have been lovely (I recall that they were the smaller type nursery). If I had a child I would certainly consider sending them to one of those nurseries.

MUM2BLESS · 19/07/2012 14:28

I personally did not send any of my 4. sahm then started cm.

I Will not judge those who choose to. All nurseries are not bad. Some good ones out there.

MUM2BLESS · 19/07/2012 14:30

When my youngest was a baby I returned to work for a while, but did not use a nursery. Never been something I really considered.

Blondeshavemorefun · 19/07/2012 15:28

no

having been sent as a temp to some a few years back - no no no

but as always there are good nurseries/nannies/cm and bad nurseries/nannies/cm

gardenpixies32 · 19/07/2012 15:34

No. I wouldn't really want anyone but me looking after my children.
I would never judge anyone who did not have the same view as me though.

ElizabethDarcy · 19/07/2012 16:12

I am a CM (Outstanding graded x 2) ... there are excellent childminders and rubbish ones, there are excellent nurseries and rubbish ones, as there are excellent nannies and rubbish ones. Mom had a nursery school for 20 years and it was BRILLIANT... well run, staff stayed for decades etc.

There is no given. What works for one family does not for another.. hence the diversity in childcare options. As long as the care is exemplary and the children are happy, safe and given wonderful learning and development opportunities, neither is better than the other in my view.

Definitely not if they are under 3, even the most outstanding ones. I have seen some good nursery classes though and would be happy for my child to be part time in my current workplace.

My DD went to 3 different nurseries from 6 months old. 2 small private ones and one large chain. The small ones were much much better. My DD had eating problems and they went out of their way to help her, went and bought every baby food going until they found something she liked. The large chain had a massively high turn over of staff, the staff hated working there, they were all very young and very under paid. NEVER AGAIN !!

bigpaws · 19/07/2012 21:15

The Nursery I worked in I wouldn't send my children to. Not a chance.
I believe children are in the education system early enough without being pushed that way before school age. Having said that, as a Childminder I am overloaded with paperwork and observations. Takes away the enjoyment of spending time with the children.

Rubirosa · 19/07/2012 21:20

I have worked in many nurseries, most I wouldn't send a child of mine to but two I would. Not full time though, at least not under 3.

BackforGood · 19/07/2012 22:04

I like ElizabethDarcey's post too.
You have to go and look at what's available in your area.
I visit lots of Nurseries as part of my job. Some of them do a fantastic job, some not so.
That said, I'd generally go for CMs over Nurseries for U2s, but it's a generalisation, not an ultimate thing.

ElizabethDarcy · 19/07/2012 22:55

'Takes away the enjoyment of spending time with the children.'

The only paperwork I do while the children are with me are their little daily diaries as they need to go home with them... ALL other paperwork is done after hours. I am there for the kids first.

ElizabethDarcy · 19/07/2012 22:56

Thank you BackforGood Smile

bigpaws · 29/07/2012 22:57

Thank you Elizabeth - my message appears to have been misread.
I didn't actually say/mean I physically do the paperwork whilst I am being paid to mind the children. I was merely saying paperwork and observations take away 'random' enjoyment of being with the children when everything is supposed to be so structured.

cakeoholic · 29/07/2012 23:09

Possibly a small one with long term staff if I had to, but would be a last resort. My gut instinct when I read your OP was NOOOOO! though.

Redglow · 30/07/2012 07:05

No way would I send my child to one. Temped in a few and not worked in one that I like.
