Hi - What do people pay for someone to babysit - as in be in the house whilst my 9 year old is asleep, say from 9 pm till midnight? I have an au pair who has free time at weekends, but I'd like to ask him to babysit occasionally on a Friday or Saturday night. Not sure what extra to give him...help! It's basically extra pocket money as he lives with me any way so is fed and doesn't need transport home.... Thanks

£10 per hour usually but as he already lives with you say £8 or £25 for 3 hours.

We give our student babysitter £20 per evening. So if we are just out for a couple if hours she is quids in but shafted a bit if we are out longer. We discussed it up front and she said she was very happy to do it that way rather than an hourly rate.

I charge £8 per hour for up to 3 children before midnight. After midnight I charge £9 per hour for up to 3 children. If there is more than 3 children I charge an extra £1 per child per hour. All my babysitting has a minimum of 3 hours.

I also charge a 25p per mile petrol cost if they are out of my 5 mile radius.

I'm your situation I'd say £7/8 per hour would be sufficient.

Hope this helps

going rate depends on alot of things, age and experience of babysitter and location

Obv childrens needs will depend on if you want a teenager or an experienced nanny/childminder/nurse/teacher (who babysits in spare time)

You say your au-pair is who you will ask so maybe £7-£8 an hr would be reasonable although he maybe happy with less, why not ask him how much he would like.

Two evenings babysitting per week is normally included in an Au Pairs duties: some employers expect this on a Friday or even Saturday, but we don't as we think it is important for au pairs to make the most of their time in London.

The agency Sitters recommended rates are here. For older children where the sitter basically gets to do marking (many of them are teachers)/watch TV/Facebook/whatever while you pay her I think these rates are fair (although we usually round up to the next £5), but if there is bathing/feeding/baby monitoring involved we have always paid a bit more on top.

I as a student nurse and teaching assistant charge £7.50ph plus traveling expences.
this is quite competitive as i know babysitters can charge from £5ph to £15ph.
Hope this helps

Saturday night babysitting is included in all our aupairs contracts as one of their babysitting nights. Totally the norm amongst everyone with around here. We never go out on Friday nights so she uses that as her big night out. If she wants to go away for the weekend then we don't ask her to babysit but most of her friends are aupairs too and have to babysit on Saturday nights so it has never been an issue.

I'm a nanny, and I charge £10ph plus the taxi fare home.
I tend to only babysit for the family I work for though, I don't really like doing it anyway and I've had too many rubbish experiences babysitting in 'friend of a friend' scenarios.

I pay a neighbours daughter (19) £6ph before midnight although always round up a bit but childcare professionals (nursery staff, nannies & CM's) charge £8-£10/hr. I wouldn't count an au pair as a childcare professional & would expect to pay £6/hr or thereabouts.

I pay my friend's 16yo dd £5 per hour to look after our two, age 5 and 8. she reads a story to ds and then spends half ann hour chatting to dd, then she's free for the rest of the eve. We take her home too.
