I'm a nanny, currently looking for work. I've never needed to become Ofsted registered as no employer has needed it. However, this time round it's being mentioned more often so I'm looking into it. But the Ofsted site is baffling, I'm really getting confused. So far, am I right in thinking-
- the voluntary register is only beneficial in terms of being paid with childcare vouchers.
- In order to become registered I need- insurance, peadiactric first aid, and 'core skills'. What is core skills? Do I need to take a course, or would this be covered by my own qualification (CACHE diploma in Childcare and Education, gained in 2003).
- It's ok to ask for parents to cover the cost of getting registered, as they are the ones to benefit- don't want to seem cheeky but most bringing up the registration are saying they will pay for it themselves. However I would need to get my own insurance.
- Registration requires a CRB which would be done at the same time, so getting a new CRB before registering would be pointless?
My thinking so far is not to actually register unless a family actually asks me to, rather than pre-emptively. Only about a 3rd of families I've been in contact with have mentioned registration so it doesn't seem worth it unless needed.
where do you register? Is it online? If any of you are registered, how long did it take? Did Ofsted check you had met the requirements or is it tick-a-box?
Many thanks if anyone can help!
