Sorry to appear so ignorant but have never used a childminder before but will prob need to soon. Would be for 2 days PW for 2 boys aged 2.5 and nearly 4, living in SE, near Horsham. Just doing my sums re salary v childcare and fell at the first hurdle!

Thanks v much.

I'm in Horsham and charges around here are around £4.50 to £5 per hour on average, although it does vary across the town & in the villages.

I'm in Oxford and charge £5.50 an hour or £50 for the day. That includes as many meals as necessary but not nappies or creams.

There is 'no average charge' for c/ms.....fees go according to local areas and in Londond they are higher due to the cost of living.

I pay £5 per hour per child. Dd's off to high school so cutting childcare in half now

There seems to be quite a variation around here (also Soth East) From about £4 to £6, depending on local demand, what's included etc. Lots have a minimum daily charge or just charge a day rate. Some charge for meals, outings and playgroups, some don't. I always suggest parents work out and look at what it will cost per year, taking into account any extras and factoring in parents' and CM's holiday fees (if charged) and the cost of any extra cover for holiday, as that is a much better basis for price comparison than focusing on hourly rate.

OP forgot to mention if you contact your local family information services find here they can send you a list of childminders with spaces in your area to give you a better idea of whose available to choose from.

Thanks everyone, loads of useful info! Feel like I am starting all over again- have 4c and have always worked part time but have prev used nursery and my mum. Now looking at CM for my youngest two so this is all really helpful. Smile
