Hi,

i was just wondering, i look after a 4 yr old in the holidays and he is 4 but is at full time school. Can i count him as an under 5 stll on my ratios, or does he have to be classed as a 5 yr old as he is at school term time??

Hope that makes sense.

If he is in for 10 sessions a week they can be classed as five so freeing up a space but if under ten then they count as under five.

thank you he does do 10 session, he's in reception class.

THEN HE WIL BE CLASSED AS OVER FIVE.

Someone asked this recenly about a 3 year old who was in 10 sessions a week but they were not classed as over 5. Out of interest, if they are in 10 sessions from age 3, do they become an over 5 for our numbers as soon as they turn 4?

ThePrisoner · 02/03/2006 17:57

A 3 year old will never be counted in your over 5s. Only a 4 year old doing 10 sessions at "proper" school (not pre-school/nursery or whatever) will be able to be classed as an over 5. They are still regarded as an over 5 in the school holidays as well.

thank you thats cleared it all up for me.

This subject really confuses me, it was me asking about my 3 yr old dd a while back I spoke to OFSTED and like TP says you cannot class a 3 year old as a five year old.

If I was in the same position as diddle would I have to class the 4 year old as 5 or is it a choice so you can take on another under 5?

Katymac · 03/03/2006 10:53

I think the problem with this is that school sometimes have nurseries that children can attend all day.

A rising 5 is attending Reception all day

If we stick to that - we're OK

Jensmum if a child is at fulltime school (9-3, M-F) then they are classed as going to school F/T irrespective of their birthdate
