Returning to work after mat leave and redundancy

Hi if I return to work after mat leave next year knowing that 4 months later my hours will be reduce to a level I can't manage on so will need to leave will I be entitled to redundancy ? Will of been there over 3 years by then.

I am not due to go on mat leave till nov this year returning in may next year, have told my boss I want to return and she said about needing 4 less hours a day from next sept to which I have told her already then I may need to leave as cant afford to lose 12 hours a week wages.

Thanks for any advice.

Maternity Leave counts as Continuous Employment, so if the role becomes redundant then you could claim redundancy pay.

Their need for a nanny is still there, it's a change in hours that is the problem. Flowery has written about this in the past, it is potentially a redundancy situation, though they should offer you the new job first.

Your employer however has already told you that the hours of work may be changing in the future. So probably best if you talk to your employer about the situation. They may not want to go through the hassle of finding someone else, they may be happy to reduce hours but increase pay - you don't know until you ask. You may find that once you return to work, things do not work out that well having your baby with you (if your employer is letting you bring your baby to work) or there may be complications with the birth.

Wait and see what happens for now... September 2013 is some time off yet. Nearer the time, discuss the upcoming changes to their childcare need and the pay situation with your boss (as it seems to be the money side of things rather than the number of hours worked which is the issue) and see if you can come to an agreement about it.
