They can't fine you more than you owe (not sure if that's any help) - they'll argue that point but dh has argued it successfully for a client. Bastards!

jellyjelly · 01/03/2006 08:45

My income was so low anyway that i owe nothing at all but they say i didnt return it on time.

Oh no :(

prettybird · 01/03/2006 09:12

I agree with getbackinyourjimjams - challenge it, as I beleive that they can only fine you if you owe them money.

It may be that as they haven't checked your figures yet, they can't "see" that.

alibubbles · 01/03/2006 10:00

Why was it so late? Not being funny, but you have 8 months to get them in. I have to have my figures is by the end of June at the very latest, or my accountant goes loopy!

DH and accountant have just started to remind me that I need to get my accounts in order for April 5th this year, it is only a month away!

Childminding accounts are so simple it is easy to keep on top of them, having said that, why do I sit down and do a whole year in one afternoon!

I am now about to pay my tax for 06-07 based on 05-06 figures. I pay it Jan 31, okay it's late and July 31st

Bad luck on the fine though, I think it's £100

jellyjelly · 01/03/2006 10:13

First year it always seems to slip out of your mind and i knew i wouldnt have to pay anything because i only worked about 3 months.

jellyjelly, did you send it in recorded or next day delivery? They tried to fine me last year but I just sent them a copy of next day delivery docket, which proved I had posted it in time to reach them by the deadline & the fine was removed.
I record every single contact with the IR, as they are slippery s*ds. I make a note of every single person I speak to and I send all correspondence recorded/next day delivery. If you don't do that at the moment, it is definitely worth thinking about for the future.
Definitely worth contesting.

jellyjelly · 01/03/2006 10:15

I didnt do that because i didnt send it someone else did as i couldnt. I will for next time.

jellyjelly- you don't have to pay a fine if you don't owe them anything. Will ask dh tonight- he knows the details.

foxinsocks · 01/03/2006 10:24

jellyjelly, have you written/spoken to them outlining your hospital treatment? If you were actually in hospital in the days you were supposed to post it in, you may have some luck (well, always worth a try!).

jellyjelly · 01/03/2006 10:29

was in for 2 1/2 weeks then being looked after till begining of feb 24/7. i onyl got the bill today but i thought it was sent in time.

Last year I paid the fine and then just reclaimed it because I didn't owe any tax. It was very straight-forward.

Have you called them?

jellyjelly · 01/03/2006 10:37

no everything has to be done in writing.

anyone got definate info on this? DP has been sent a late fine despite the fact he sent it off in good time (infact he has to return two sets - business and own- and has only been fined for his own...)

Bugsy2 · 01/03/2006 11:15

Blackduck, definitely contest it. Explain that you sent two sets off at the same time.
Definitely recommend always going for proof with the IR. It is their job to get as much money as possible for the Government (whatever colour) and they'll do that however they can. Don't leave yourself open to accusations of lateness, just go to the post office and get a proof of postage.
