Term time only child care

I am a teacher in Cardiff and looking for nursery or childminder that doesn't charge for the holiday, im affect term time only child care. I am beginning to see that childminders charge a retainer which isn't as bad as paying full price but is there such a nursery or childminder that does term time only?

Many thanks

Can't offer any suggestions for Cardiff but my CM does term-time only so they do exist! I think a lot of CMs round here (South London) offer this particularly if they have school age children of their own, with whom they'd like to spend the majority of the school holidays.

Good luck!

I also offer term time only contracts...though I think I'm in the minority in my local area. I'm in Newport...so near, yet so far!

Richards94 · 03/07/2012 20:38

Yes do near but so far!!!! You don't know of any this way do you?!

We only pay £5 a week retainer for a childminder in the hols, which is big improvement from the £15 (half price) we used to have to pay another childminder. I did know of one nursery that did term time only contracts with no retainer fees, but I don't think that is the norm. We're in north Wales though so not much used to you.

I have a friend who uses one near St Mellons...is that any use?

Runoutofideas · 04/07/2012 07:57

I'm in Bristol and only offer term-time only contracts as i like to spend the holidays with my own children. I seem to have found a bit of a niche with teachers' children! Not very helpful to you, but just wanted you to know that we do exist!

Richards94 · 04/07/2012 19:09

Possibly. If you could let me know the name that'd be great. Thanks.

Yes there are a couple of CM's near me that do term time only and both just charge a higher rate (roughly 50-75p an hour more) but no holiday retainer. so yes definitely but not your area I'm afraid.

missmapp · 04/07/2012 19:59

I have a term time contract with my childminder- she charges me a higher daily rate than her all year round children- still much cheaper than paying all year round though!!

marcopront · 05/07/2012 00:02

If you do find a term time only child minder, do work out the total cost for the year and compare it with a full year contract. It might not be cheaper.
Also consider you might want some cover in the holidays - so you can do planning, go into school, have your hair done etc.

I'm a teacher in Henley on Thames and I'm looking for term time care before and after school. Any cm out there?
Thanks

looneytune · 08/07/2012 12:01

I'm not in Cardiff but yes, they do exist! I'm desperate to fill one of my spaces from September as Term Time only as I'll then have too many children in the school hols, I'd therefore not charge anything during the holidays. Not all childminders can fill 'holiday only' spaces hence needing to charge. You just need to see if you can find something suitable in your area!

SandStorm · 08/07/2012 12:03

I'm in Sussex and I've found an afterschool nanny who does term time only so they do exist.

The 1/2 retainer during holidays 'retains' the space when children come back and, remember c/m's income drops for the holiday time when children go off..
Another way is to do Term Time only for one family and 'holidays' only for another...so no retainer but income still coming in

People forget that c/ms have limited numbers of children we can care for and still have families to feed and mortgage to pay during the holidays

Here flexibility is the name of the game !!!

anewyear · 08/07/2012 19:25

Sorry not your area, but all my (4) mindees are term time, after schoolers, so yes we do exist Smile

IwishIwasmoreorganised · 08/07/2012 19:36

How old are your dc op?

Could you use breakfast clubs and after school clubs instead of a cm?

I live in The Vale of Glamorgan, and our council have a database of childcare providers on their website. Not sure if Cardiff do the same. How childminders charge is up to them though, so I think you'll have to do a fair bit of phoning around the find one who doesn't charge for school holidays. You might also find after meeting a few that you'd rather pay a summer retainer or lower fees during school holidays in order to get the childminder who is right for you and your dc.

Good luck!

Hi my name is Claire and I'm a childminder in Canton, Cardiff. I charge a half fee retainer during the holidays for teachers but this space is then available for you to use at any time whether it be to do any prep work or just have a day to yourself.
If you would like any further info please have a look at my website www.freewebs.com/clairechapmanchildminder or feel free to contact me.
Kind regards
Claire

My cm does. She has 2 teachers kids that rarely go in the hols and so it means she has space for my school aged dd in the hols.
