Hi there. I have been in child care in the past 9-10yrs and have excellent references and still keeping in touch with the families, children... Never left a job, never been fired and luckily things always went ok and always managed to find nice employers and lovely childen :) But not this time... I am currently working but kids starting school from Sept so I already started looking for a new position to start from September. /I won't be available for interviews in August so have to do it before/ I went for 2 interviews so far .... 1st I met a lovely mom and she said before the interview that she will need 4 days /40hours/ and on the interview she actualy told me she would only need 3days.... so I can't do that and felt a bit unhappy.... why did I had to go there in the first place she shoud of told me before... the 2nd interview was nice /nanny share/ untill we mentioned money.... She asked me my salary expectation and I told her what i was getting in the past 2yrs /normal pay for my area/ and she said that is too much she didn't tell me how much she is thinking to pay , I tried to ask her abour 3 times... she said she has to talk to the other mom and think about budget etc... Anyoane have a good idea how much is fair for a nanny share in west London??? honestly I just try to find a nice employer who is looking for a nice nanny! Nothing special really , I love kids, very energetic, never been unfair to any family I ever worked for and simly asking for a family who is kind, don't want to under pay and willing to pay my tax and Ni. sometimes people send me mgs about tax and when i tell them they have to pay it they kind of shocked... :( I simly want to do everything legaly right so I will be able to get a mortgage in the future etc... I am married and happy where I live and want to find a good job in my area ... I know everyone having a hard time but if you want to employ someone you have legal responsibilities. I love the fact that families asking for so many things now in an add: sometimes 2languages,lot of experience, 2-3 references, Crb,driving licence, good cook, swimmer, love of animals etc...which is fine but when you just simply ask for 2things: normal pay for your area and tax ....that's when it starting to go all wrong... I have to kind of beg for my tax which is very unconfortable and hate doing it!Seems slightly unfair and not sure what to do.......

I make sure that families know that x amount is my salary per hr and that they need to sort tax etc.. Before I even agree to an interview

Saves time wasters! Most nannies like myself would still be in employment whilst looking for next job. If your working 60+ hrs min I doubt you have time to interview for fun!

We also have our own families and I wouldn't go for a job offering me less than I need

Iv worked hard/ trained hard ( and spent a lot of money training!) and don't see why I should t be able to say what I will/ Wont work for.

Yes a nanny is expensive, if you say the fee is too high then unfortunately you simply can't afford a nanny

Aninanny, I help my father with payroll for his small business. He once forgot to send the cheque to Hmrc before his holidays. He received a reminder letter from HMRC within 2 weeks, and then the next letter was threatening baliffs 2 weeks later. If you set up a payroll account and then do not pay, believe me HMRC will not allow you to get away with not paying the tax over.

medjool · 03/07/2012 20:03

The more I read, the more convinced I become that nannies need to quote salary in gross and not net.

forevergreek · 03/07/2012 20:14

I don't see why it matters either way

I quote what I want as a net wage

I get weekly payslips with all the details and my income is specified in gross, net, ni contributions, employers ni contributions etc..

It says gross right in front of me but doesnt stop me asking in net

ceeveebee · 03/07/2012 20:43

It matters if you have more than one job. or if your tax code changes from one year to the next. For example if you took a second job and asked for net, thenthe second family would have to pay basic rate tax on your entire wage as first family willhave tax code, so it will be more expensive per hour for second family

forevergreek · 03/07/2012 20:49

Ah see I have no time out of work, let alone for another job!

ethelb · 03/07/2012 20:52

OP, I think you sound like a wonderful nanny and that you do a good job.

Howeer, I do think a lot of nannies and child minders on these boards have v high expectations.

I know of someone in my industry who tried the whole 'oh but I was quoting net with my salary expectations' and was told tough. She was paye but there was no way they were going to give her an extra 33% on top as she 'had to pay tax'. Everyone does!

Plus, I havne't been told salary until offered the job for all my jobs.

Plus, I think that if parents in your area aren't earning £10ph net then you aren't going to either.

Don't mean to sound mean, but you do need a bit of a reality check. Anyone else in any other industry woudl have been given one for the same post.

eastnorth · 03/07/2012 21:07

This doesn't sound that much to me. She knows what she has been earning.

EverybodysDoeEyed · 03/07/2012 21:14

I would find it easier to know what the nanny expects gross rather than net

have you tried using an agency? The agency i used were very clear with me that I was expected to pay tax and they would not place a nanny with me if they suspected I would not

Aninanny · 03/07/2012 23:01

I have no idea but she easily done it without any prob. Sadly

Hi, thanks for all helps and advice.... I went for an interview last week and met a lovely Mom /really nice :)/ and because she only need 3 days /I have to work full time/ she suggested nanny share with her friend who lives near by... She asked me about tax , and mentioned that she think if I am working forr 2 or more families I can be self employed. (by the way she is a lawyer....) I told her that I don't think so and will check it.... what do you think? hmmmm

Aninanny
happen to me many years ago that family never paid my tax the only way i found out is that i sign on once i left them so they had to pay

and you know as well as i do that nanny cant be self employed

ceeveebee · 04/07/2012 10:11

I agree, don't think a nanny with 2 families can be self employed. The only nannies that I know of that can be self employed are night nannies and maternity nurses because their work is very adhoc and irregular

confusedpixie · 04/07/2012 10:13

You are all employed and being told your hours by those two families so I'd say no, my boss tried that one with me and when I called to check I was told that they could look into my circumstances but it would likely be a no anyway!

EverybodysDoeEyed · 04/07/2012 11:54

If you are being paid mre than £153 a week by the employer then they are responsible for your tax

ceeveebee · 04/07/2012 12:25

everybody, that only applies to your first job. If you have a second job, it is all subject to tax and employer is responsible for this

EverybodysDoeEyed · 04/07/2012 13:01

Yes. I meant the woman she would be working 3 days a week for.

Aninanny · 04/07/2012 21:02

Cool, this is what I was thinking too.... Ohhh guys feeling hopeless... Never had poblems finding a proper job... Now a family calling me back for the 3rd interview.... I am gettin tired!!! I use to go for 1 interview in the past 9 years and families called back if they liked me and offered a job... now is only part time or no tax or 3 interviews families around...what's going on??? Am I getting old...? lol

Aninanny I think it's probably a reflection of the difficult economic conditions which means everyone is tightening their belts.

Aninanny · 05/07/2012 19:48

I am not sure I can just guess... I think she got the p45 from her accountant so she just simply didn't payed it in or stopped the account or I don't know... it happend few yrs ago and didn't asked about this but my accountant told me that this happening with lot of people not just nannies! Even agancies doing it! /he said/. I was shoked when my accountant told me that the payslips and P45 actually doesn't prove anythink , he can print out anything too.....so as he said. She was responsible for paying it towards HMR. She of course didn't. I was stupid cause I haven't had a written contract with her. If I had that is the proof! At least this is what my accountant told me. But to be honest even if I had a contract , probably i wouldn't try ro contact HMR....maybe it's sounds stupid but I don't need more stress etc... I just had enought of her! Next time I will be extra carefull! Trust me :)

Nanny share extra hours for only one family? Babysitting? Do you charge the normal local rate for 1 family or the half of the nanny share rate? Which is fair???
