I am in shock. Am doing some research for somtheing and came across a government website about careers in childcare - it did not mention, not once, being a nanny. I am totally shocked. This is meant to be a website encouraging people to investigate and pursue careers in childcare and nannies just don't feature. Is this because the govt is still fixed in promoting only the type of childcare that it sees fit for us mere mortals to access? Is it because they are stupid and class obssessed and think that nannies are the perogative of the upper classes? I kind of assume Cherie and Tony don;t clock off at 5.30 to rush back and pick Leo up from nursery. grrrrrrrr.

they aren't
look at the childcare element of tax credits
70% is OK - but it is capped and therefore what providers charge (nurseries/Cmers) is artifically held at a low rate

They class Nannies as being Childminders, but in the employer's home.
Were you on the SureStart website? If so, there's a link to the National Childminder's Association, and from there a link to Nannying.
It is there, it just comes under Childminding not as a branch on its own.

So you've read the Oliver Sachs book too have you?

I find that often the choices shown are Childminder or Nursery, where in reality children are cared for by more than just those two types of care. For example, grandparents, after-school club, holiday club, creche, pre-school playgroup, family friend, nanny.

I did come across a leaflet at my local library this week however, which was titled Choosing a Nanny, so leaflets of this type do exist.

Nannying is not childminding - whatever NCMA want to say. NCMA are not our government, they are a charity, whose aim is to promote Childminders!
What I suspect you found was a link about the Childcare Approval Scheme (which with luck will die an early death, like the scheme before it - you can tell I don't like it ) which is supposed to encourage parents back to work by enabling them to claim back some tax by using an approved nanny. However, in my case, my employer is unable to claim, due to government red tape - thus I am not impressed with their scheme!

What I would like to see is Childcare Link listing ALL forms of childcare. The organisation behind childcare link feels that it should... but their hands are tied (by whom I do wonder), so for now it does not list nannies - even though CAS say we can ask to be listed - Surrey County Council said NO - so asking does not help!

I think it might have been something to do with surestart - but it was very definitely aimed at poeple interested in working in childcare - to leave out (or hide - whichever it was) nannying is disgraceful - both from the pov of people interested in careers and because of the knock on effect for us parents.
