does anyone know if individuals employed by non-business indivduals can join a trade union or similar professional organisation? what about cleaners? what would this mean for the employer? If they can't does anyone know what the rationale is?

Yes, everyone is entitled to join a union. For the employer, this would mean that the nanny/cleaner might be more clued up about her rights and would be entitled to union representation at disciplinary meetings etc. It would be very hard to think of a situation in which the cleaner/nanny could legitimately go on strike and I doubt most unions would devote resources to any disputes - they have bigger fish to fry.
