First aid course for au pair

Hi there I would like to arrange for my minder / au pair to go on a first aid course. I 'd prefer to host it at my house ( I live in Merton) - can anyone recommend a good first aid course? I was looking at First Aid for Life - has anyone been on their courses? Any feedback much appreciated thank you.

Are you looking at 1:1 training... that could be very costly.

If you get together 12 people to do the course, then companies like Surrey First Aid may be prepared to run you a course aimed at parents. I don't know if they would do it for smaller groups - possibly though the cost per person will increase I would have thought.

FirstAidForLife I guess are offering similar courses, small group at your home or at a venue.

Do you need your au-pair to do a course that is recognised for Ofsted registration? If so then it needs to meet specific criteria. The shorter courses aimed at parents will often not meet that criteria, though longer courses - say 6 hours+ may meet it.

Consider what you need the course to include... for example some short courses may focus on just baby, or just child. Do you have a baby? If not, may not be important for your au-pair to learn about that... but for the au-pairs own personal development, it may be useful to do so, as a future job in chidcare may involved caring for a baby. I would say that you should aim for a 1 day course - so 6 to 8 hours, rather than the shorter courses - it will cover many of the common things and include a practical element. Ask course providers about the course content - they should be able to advise you on what they feel is best for the audience you have (so your au-pair plus whomever else is in the group).

The red cross do 1 day courses - either adult or baby and children's first aid.

Hi,
We did the course with the parent company www.theparentcompany.co.uk/
They were really good and they come to your house to provide the training. I think it was about £50 pp and they need 5-6 people minimum so we did it with our au pair and our friends and their au pair.

thank you all for your help - think I will go with the shorter parent company course just to start off with.

I did the same thing as andagain but with "safe and sound". It was excellent. They also do drop in courses aimed at au pairs/parents. Go to www.safeandsound.uk.net/catalogue_products.php?ad=1&catID=4457

I did first aid for life, excellent training plus good value and succinct (eg they fit what takes two tedious days with St Johns Ambulance into one day).

St Johns Ambulance. They will also do it at your home, I think was approx £350 for paediatric first aid for group of four people at home with full documentation. Was an excellent course with lots of time to practise.

They also have lots of centres in London, which is obviously a lot cheaper.
