well it depends on the attitude of your employer- they might let you take a day's unpaid leave, or it may be taken out of your holiday. I'm afraid when my dd is too sick to go to nursery, either dh or I phone in sick ourselves- it's not strictly honest, but on the other hand, we do tend to go into work when feeling rotten, when other less hardy souls might take a day off. Swings and roundabouts.

If you have a break down in childcare arrangements you are entitled to take unpaid leave, classed as emergency leave for dependents.

You do NOT have to use your holiday entitlement.

Check out the DTI (dept trade & industry) website for more information on your employment rights. It doesnt matter what your contract says - these are statutory rights for all employees.

my employer gives up to 5 days dependency leave a year, to be taken whenever care arrangements fall through. not sure what (if any) legislation there is for this.

VeniVidiVickiQV · 22/02/2006 20:44

Agree though that from a certain point of view - its more worthwhile to "chuck a sickie" because then at least you get ssp if nothing else.

up to the child reaching the age of 5 is there not something about parental leave (unpaid) of up to 13 weeks or something?

foxinsocks · 22/02/2006 21:30

ask your childminder to set up emergency childminder contacts so that when she is sick, she possibly has other childminder friends who could take your child

you also need to think about what you will do when your child is ill

lexiemum · 22/02/2006 21:51

all employers must consider the needs of employees with families of children under 5yrs old - law now is for X weeks (sorry not sure what it is) per year as emergency carers leave can be taken and must be honoured by employers as unpaid leave. some employers as mine, within reason, pay carers leave in these circumstances.

we have an emergency childminder within our contract but would envisage only using this when something happened whilst children are in cm care - e.g. other child requires A&E attention and mine go to other cm whilst I'm getting back from work.

If our CM went sick then DH or I would stay at home or do a shorter day, leaving children with grandparents.

just take carers leave. you can usually have up to 5 days per annum paid. however depends on your job you havent said what you do.

uwila · 23/02/2006 10:37

My company would give me the time off for parental leave but it would be unpaid. So I would take a holiday, or ask to make up the time by staying late other days.
