Hi Everyone...

Brand new on the site... I'm looking forward to spending the summer with my nephew (8) and niece (4). Although I have been close by and in regular contact all their lives, due to recent changes in the family; they're in need of my full time care for the summer. Although I have some passes to the local pool in the town I'm from and YMCA memberships also. I'm feeling anxious about having children, for the first time throughout three to four days of the week. I'm certain I'll adjust and with some time I'll feel like a pro, it's just first time jitters, I hope! Anyone been in a similar situation-with words of experience and encouragement, it would be appreciated.

Sincerely, Velvet

You mentioned feeling anxious about having children. is that of your own or your nephew and niece?

I have four kids of my own and cm quite a few I remember having a little baby to care for the first time (few hours). It felt very strange as I walked to my house pushing the buggy. It was not my child. I looked very carefully as I crossed the road etc. It felt so different having another persons child to care for.

After a while, having the baby full time, it got easier.

I remember looking after my eldest when he eventually came home from the hospital. None of us are pros to start with, it takes time, sometimes lot of time. I am still learning.

all the best

Check to see what activities your local authority are offering over the summer. Is your town also their town? If they can meet up with friends this could take the pressure off.

Cooking and gardening can be fun activities. The local library could offer CDs, DVDs and computer games as well as books. Make sure you have some basic art stuff - paper, felt pens, colouring pencils, paint etc.

Remember, kids sometimes just need to chill.
