Au pair in the Uk - can she come to the USA & live, if she wants ?

Hi, I've got baby no 2 coming in Aug & would like to take a year off. DD will be 3 in June & instead of her going to nursery, I quite like the idea of having an au pair. Maybe for the summer, maybe for longer if it works well.

However, we are currently planning a 2 yr move to the US. Would, & if she wanted to, we be able to take her with us (am thinking a spanish girl) & how would we deal with things like health insurance ? I assume she'd get paid the $ equivalent ?

Have looked on the US au pair site, but they seem to cost a fortune.

Thanks for any advice or pointers in the right direction

I think you'll have some problems with this. I'm not sure how hard it is to get a visa. You should probably contact the American Embassy for advice. However, I do know an Itallian girl (who I interviewed for a nanny). I hired someone else. But, she then took a job in California, and said that the visa to get into the US (for 10 years!) was really easy to get. She just filled out some paper work and waited a few weeks for it to be processed. So, perhaps a Spanish girl would find it easy as well?

Where in the US are you moving to? And why not hire someone who already lives there? They would probably already have some sort of medical insurance worked out. And, if things didn't work out, you wouldn't have to fly them back to europe.

What sort of duties do you have in mind for this au pair?

thanks for your reply.

Not sure about duties readlly just looking for an additional set of hands. Hopefully DD will go to pre-school a couple of mornings a week, so accompany me to this, folding their clothes, just a bit of general help & entertainment in the afternoon.

There is a domestic employee visa, but they need to have worked for you for a year before moving to the US.

You can get the details from US Embassy website
