I asked my doctor about the health declaration booklet and he said it would cost £70 to process this for me. Is that right, and can I claim that back?
I start the course tomorrow evening, the next two saturdays all day and another evening. I have half filled out all the forms and at the moment am feeling quite overwhelmed by it all. It is beginging to feel like alot of hard work. I know it is all going to be worth it once it all starts going through. How long did it take you all to become registered. And what is the actual going rate for childminding now?

Many thanks adn look forward to talking to you all soon as I am sure to have many questions.

do you get a grant. because im going through process at moment but my early years dept had an evening session called how to become a chilminder where they told you about everything really. i get a grant once ofsted have given me a date for registration visit. the grant covers safety equipment, health check fees, icp course fees, first aid course fees etc.

Hi Isyhan
I think you get a start up grant of which £175 is already accounted for by nmca and insurance etc. Don't know about any other grant though at the briefing meeting I went to a couple of weeks ago nothing was said. Guess I will find out though tomorrow evening.

Its a while ago now since I had to do this but as far as I can remember once you become registered you can claim back your fees for health check, first aid course and ofsted registration fee.
I attended info evening in May, did ICP in july, did first aid course in sept, had 1st ofsted visit in sept and got my registration certificate in oct so 5 months from start to finish, not bad really as I know for some people on here it has taken much longer.
Good luck with your ICP.

Do you live in a surestart area? If you do you may be entitled to another grant (I missed out on this but got the one that paid for training and NCMA stuff)

Different doctors charge for different things, I think they can just charge whatever they like. This was was mentioned on a thread a while ago and it varied alot.

The rate varies from area to area, go to childcarelink and check where you live. You could even email some minders to ask them there rates and about any local toddler groups (I did this, I always wrote that I was a new minder so they didn't think I wanted someone to have dd.)

Good luck with your course and registration, it is worth all the hard work.

Isyhan - Did you have to pay for your ICP & First aid?

Sorry small hijack!

littlenutmeg · 21/02/2006 15:02

Will keep you posted on the grant side after first of ICP tomorrow night. Yes I am in a sure start area so maybe that is worth enquiring after. Thank you for that one.

I paid £15 for my first aid which is half costs but I dont pay for ICP. I just have to ring a number and take my paperwork along to first ICP session.

jellyjelly · 21/02/2006 18:49

You have to do a first aid course within i think the first 5 months but they prefer understandably for you to have it before you start and the course are subserdised. Can you contact your early years department to get put ona list?

jellyjelly · 21/02/2006 18:49

Should have been 6 months not 5
