Has anyone taken a child of 2 plus out of nursery and put them with a CM?

We are thinking of taking our two year old DS out of nursery as he just doesn't seem to be gelling there... He has been going since last August and I still get tears in the mornings :( The nursery also say that he seems reluctant to access the activities - this has happened since he moved from the baby room into the older children's room. We just want him to be happy at the end of the day....

We are thinking of a CM instead, then maybe trying nursery again at a later date. He is an autumn birthday so could still have a full year at nursery if he started in Sept 13.

Has anyone done this? Any comments or suggestions on what to look out for?

This is exactly the conversation my DH and I have just had about our youngest DS. I was about to start a thread about virtually the same thing :) Will await responses

I am a cm and have a mindee who came at 2.6months after nearly 2 years in nursery. She is much happier with us.

I've had children come to me at a similar age from nursery and all settled well. Some children just need that more intimate, less bustley environment that you should get with a cm

I've got two who have come to me from nursery for similar reasons. One came to me at 20 months. When he received his EYEE he went to a different nursery one extra day a week and stayed with me for the same 3 days as he has always done.

You know what's best for your child, I'd trust your instincts.

I have had children come to me from nursery. Some have stayed until they started school and others have tried some kind of part time pre school or nursery later.

CMs offer the same education and preparation for school as nurseries, it just depends what kind of atmosphere you are aiming for.

Similar issues here, DD 28 months has been going to nursery for about 6 months now. Happy there during the day but still cries in the morning and never wants to go. Nursery is a bit rubbish with paperwork, so things like end of the day paperwork is hardly ever ready when I pick her up. I find it annoying that I don't actually know what she has been eating or playing with (they don't display the menu anywhere) unless I specifically ask these questions and there is only so much time you have)

Ive been trying to list the pros and cons of each but not getting very far yet:

Childminder:

  • closer to home
  • small setting
  • energetic CM
  • food cooked from fresh every day
  • kids taken to parks, soft play, play ground, i.e. places I take her
  • could have a nap in a separate, quiet room
  • after initial fights, played well with CM's own child
  • cost, works out £25 more expensive per day
  • no garden (although they do go out)
  • CM's own child can be very jealous of his toys being played with
  • holidays and sickness covers
  • hiring an assistant from July so will be two pairs of hands but also more children (up to four), space?

Nursery:

  • already settled
  • reducing days from 3 to 2 so doesn't matter so much if doesn't nap, although has started napping more often recently
  • more staff in case one has a bad day
  • outdoor space
  • only closed a few days a year
  • much cheaper than CM
  • lack of feedback
  • bus ride away from home (and once my office changes location, it'll out of my usual way so not ideal, but still just for two days a week)

I am currently thinking of writing a letter to the nursery asking for more information as verbal feedback does not seem to go anywhere...

Coming back to this with huge relief. I felt like a freak yesterday, seeing all the smiley, happy children go strolling into nursery and he is there crying in my arms...

So emmie, did you settle her into the CM alongside the nursery?

Do you feel it is going to get better at nursery or whether you should make the change now?
