Hi ladies!
I live in south west Wales..Pembrokeshire area, and work in a nursery full time. However I have now arranged with my boss to have one set full day and one set afternoon off a week to child mind for a family I know well and already babysit for. The children are 4yo and 2yo, I will be looking after them 8am-6pm on the full day, the 2yo all day and the 4yo before and after school. (excluding half term Etc when i'll have them both)
The other day I will be picking them both up from school and nursery at 3pm until 6pm.

I'm really stuck on what to ask for regarding payment, I know prices around here are a lot less then somewhere such as london etc. Our nursery charges £4.50 an hour at the moment, but I know it's different to a child minding job. What amount an hour would you suggest? Or do you already receive yourself? Childmindee's mum has asked what I'd like and would really appreciate some advice before I say for definite!

TIA and please excuse my ignorance! :-)

Look on childcare.co.uk and see if anyone local has prices on. Are you doing it at your house remember you'll need to cover insurance/paperwork/toys etc out of the money.

Will you be minding them in your house, in which case you need to register as a Childminder, or their house where they'll employ you as a nanny? This will affect what rate you decide upon.

Oh sorry ... Wales...are the rules different?

RedRobin36 · 23/05/2012 16:27

Thanks very much for the help, i'll definitely have a look on that website. I will be looking after them at their house so I guess i'll be employed as a nanny now you've mentioned it, have you any experience with nanny rates? Not too sure if the rules differ here, will have to look into it. Thanks again!

Hi RedRobin. The rules are the same in Wales - you can look after children in someone elses house without registering but not in your own house. Well not for more than 2 hours at a time unless they're over 8.

I'm afraid I can't help with Nanny Rates, might be worth ringing any Nanny agencies that operate in your area and see if they can give you an idea of a going rate?

Don't forget about tax and national insurance. The family will have to pay those on what they pay you, so make sure they are aware of that and factor it into the discussions on pay.
