au pair - a seriously ridiculous question!

I fear this is a very silly question to post but my husband and I can't agree what to do so thought we'd canvass opinion!

Does it matter what size bed an au pair needs? Even as I write it I know it sounds silly, but the room they will have currently has a kingsize bed, which is far too big for the space. My husband wants a single so there's room for other furniture and I think a double would be better...because who wants to sleep in a single!? Should mention there's a lovely built in wardrobe and space for a desk/dressing table either way!

Silly question I know!

i have a feeling that its a british thing not wanting to sleep in a single bed. i was very surprised when i realised that lots of british adults dont like sleeping in a single bed and would buy a double for one person just for that reason. while it is nice in a way to sleep in a double, it also means making a big bed and changing a big bed and ironing and drying big sheets which is all a pain. if you are thinking about guests /which i dont know whether you are/ thenyou might think of a single with a pull out mattress or something to that effect.

Depends on whether you are happy or not for the AP to have boyfriends visiting on occasion or not. Work out where you stand on that one and use that to answer your original Qn.

We had au pairs for years and they had a single bed. I would have been very unhappy if they'd brought boyfriends to stay overnight, with two small girls in the house, but none of them ever asked.
I think a single bed is fine, and would bet that most girls would prefer to have the extra space in the room.

I would go for a double. Would prefer one myself and also if you only have an au pair for a year or two then will be perfect as a guest bed after of for one of your children if older by then

If you have a bed already & the room contains a wardrobe, desk etc - why would you bother going to the expense of changing it?
You write your own rules about boyfriends coming to stay, so that is irrelevant.

I love my double bed at work. Had a single bed in a past job and wasnt a fan.

chithu · 20/05/2012 12:42

i had single beds on both the places i au paired in London - while it was adequate, it would have been great to have a bigger bed... single beds are low maintanance, yes, but as a ""thrasher", it took me quite some time to get used to sleeping without falling off....

As far as aupairs are concerned, it never occurred to me they would object to a single bed. We live in London and space is at a premium. It is great that they have a small but well-appointed room with adequate storage and a single bed.

If they were in university dorms, they would have got a single bed as well. Not sure what the fuss is.

PhyllisDoris · 20/05/2012 22:11

We had two au pairs from eastern Europe who both said that the room they had at our house was the first time they hadn't had to share a room with someone else - sibling, or friend at uni. They couldn't have cared less about size of bed.

writingale · 24/05/2012 04:57

I think the last post answered your question, OP. Ask your au pair what she prefers. if she says single bed is fine, then you can redo the room. if she says she would love a king (as I would have, during my time as an au pair - yes i did get a "mean" single, lol I love that!) bed then let the bed stay in the room.

As long as it does not inconvenience you, I think you can let your au pair make the call on this one... and it'll be an extra nice gesture too, I am sure she will know that you are being very generous and hopefully that will be the start of a great au pair - host r'ship :)

No boyfriends rule here... Single bed for my au pairs.

sunshinenanny · 26/05/2012 01:01

Why go to the expense of getting rid of a kingsize bed? Would you get rid of the kingsize or store it? I would leave well alone, single bed, Yukk!
