Last nanny's mother got sick in November.

Current nanny's grandfather is about to have life support switched off.

I feel so helpless. I want to get her home or something but there are no flights until tomorrow night and then it would be too late. I don't know what to say or how to approach the subject to let her know it's up to her and we can cover childcare or if she doesn't want to go just to let us know what she's feeling up to.

If it's a long way away then there is little you can do apart from let her have some compassionate leave if she is able to get there in time. However she may not want to be there when he dies... may just want to go to the funeral.

Let her know that you can cover childcare for whatever period you are able to cover it... and see what she wants to do. The funeral may take place quickly, or take a while to be arranged.

Everyone deals with grief differently, so just be there for support should she need it.
