Registered Childminder taking on too much

weebuns · 25/04/2012 18:07

My potential registered childminder has told me she has 2 spaces, one for an under 5 and one for an over 5. She said she would be willing to take my 2 kids on who are 2 and the other 8 months. She told me I shouldn't worry. Should I?

She might get a whatdoyoucall it - I cannot remeber the name, but I had one when I minded 1 x 4 year old and her 18 month old babysister and 1 x3 year old and his 6 month baby brother. I got a special permission fromt eh care Comission

Flisspaps · 25/04/2012 18:12

If she were to do this without first seeking a variation from Ofsted she'd be in breach of her registration, and her insurance will be void.

I can't see her getting a variation for 4 children under 5 (she must already have one under 5 in her care to only have two spaces as most of us can only have 3 under 5) with at least one of those being under 1 and three of them being new business - I assume it would be a full time arrangement?

I wouldn't touch her with a bargepole (am a CM myself)

weebuns · 25/04/2012 18:21

She has her own 2.5 yr old and a 3 year old. Her 7 and 9 yr old are at school.

so a 8 month old, a 2 year old, a 2.5 year old and a 3 year old? for starters how big is her pushchair? i think it sounds like too much. i wouldn't do it.

5318008 · 25/04/2012 18:26

If she can get an official variation from Ofsted then you could consider it

3 under 5s plus a baby is a lot to manage (I know several marv Cms who manage magnificently, on here and in RL) - is she very experienced, does she have enough car seats/high chairs/triple buggy etc etc

If no variation or intention or willingness to apply for one then you can kiss her goodbye IYSWIM

Flisspaps · 25/04/2012 19:20

Ah, I was reading it as you had 2x 2 year olds Blush

gardenpixies32 · 25/04/2012 20:12

If she can get the variation you could consider it.

I have a variation for 4 under 5's. One day of the week I have 4 boys...22, 23, 24 months and a 8 month old. It is hard work but I do manage.

parkavenue · 25/04/2012 21:12

I have a variation for one day a week to have an extra sibling meaning on that day I have a 4yr, 3yr, 23m and 20m girl. I wouldn't want an extra every day though!

wishiwasonholiday · 25/04/2012 21:56

I have variations for 5 days a week and when I started had a 3 month old, 7 month old, 1 year old and 2 year old!

Are you sure she doesn't have an assistant?

Saltire · 25/04/2012 22:30

Variation thats the word I was looking for Grin

nannynick · 25/04/2012 22:35

Are variations possible when it's New Business rather than a Sibling?

Saltire · 25/04/2012 22:38

I don't know, I'd been registered a while when I got the variation for siblings, and by a while I mean about 3 years.

wishiwasonholiday · 26/04/2012 06:19

I got a variation to take on my first mindee as I had my own 3 month old and wanted to take on another under 1, I hadn't had my first inspection, the lady who did my per reg visit approved it.

mopbucket · 26/04/2012 08:21

If u dont feel comfy dont do it
Me personally i feel when a cm has a pre school child of their own as well as cm children its hard as their own children seek more attention from them never mind having 2 pre-schoolers herself
She needs a medal Grin

5318008 · 26/04/2012 08:49

moppy you would be surprised at how effectively most CMs put the minded children in front of their own Smile

ayla99 · 26/04/2012 13:14

You should worry if she is offering to care for more children than her registration allows. Read her certificate, if you haven't already done so. Check if she is actually proposing to ignore the Ofsted restrictions or whether she has anybody leaving or having a birthday and moving up an age-group or something or something else that we haven't guessed.

If you are not satisfied that she is following the rules then don't go ahead with the arrangement. She will be leaving herself open to complaints and you could find yourself without a childminder suddenly in the future when she is shut down. Also, if she's willing to bend these rules - which necessitates lying and deceit - what other rules and laws might she ignore and would you ever know about it?

mopbucket · 27/04/2012 13:00

i know 5318008 and then cm own children rebel

been a nursery nurse for 12yrs and a cm for 9yrs ive seen alsorts Wink

boredandrestless · 27/04/2012 13:05

I would be wanting to know if she is officially asking Ofsted for a variation to allow you dcs, or if she is suggesting she ignores her ratios and takes in as many kids as she decides on.

kkoo · 01/05/2012 11:51

She may intend to give notice to another customer to ake a place available? Maybe you should ask her how she intends to take on both children.
