Nannies- I need to give notice to my nanny :<. how should i do it?

should i write a letter? come home early from work and have a chat and then give a letter? i am contractually bound to give 1 motnh's notice but am planning 3 months to give nanny time to find other work. does this seem ok? is there anything else i can do to be kind? i fear this will be totally unexpected.

Definitely do it face-to-face, if you think she will not be expecting it. And then confirm with a letter.

However, if she is only due a month's notice, think hard about giving her 3. What if she were to leave after a month? You would - presumably - have 2 months with no childcare.

Option 2 - informal chat about the situation, then give the formal letter - which the nanny may need as proof that you are ending the agreement not due to something the nanny has done.

Is that the case though... are you ending the agreement due to no fault of the nanny? Are you making the nanny redundant?

What happens if the nanny finds work quickly? Would you still be needing childcare for the next 3 months? As a nanny I would certainly appreciate knowing that I was not likely to be needed as of x date.

How long as your nanny been employed by you? You may need to read about Redundancy Pay.

THanks Nick. It isnt due to her fault (well sort of, we do find that the nanny doesnt occupy herslef as much during the school day as we would expect and has insisted on bringing youngest child along which limits activities ie thinks is ok to do a few jobs for dcs and then go off and do own thing for at least half school day and also child causes damage to our home so if those werent the case we might have tried to continue to employ but is so very expensive when all dcs agt school all day tbh). we have a friend who now can help us out in return for us helpign them out with parental help too so kind of no longer needed. does that make sense? hadnt thought of redundancy pay though. interesting thought. we will need childcare for the next 3 months so is it kinder to not give that much notice?

ifecd, I think you are effectively redunding her, so before you do anything look up her rights in redundancy (depends on how long she has been with you afaik) and make sure you are complying with that before writing any letters.
