Isn't that a laugh

It worries me though that people might believe them

I'll have to tell my BF that she's undercharging by quite a considerable amount. Who comes up with these figures?

HellyBelly · 10/02/2006 16:11

What a joke - my current mindee is almost full time (8.30-6.30, mon - thurs) and I get £546 a month (incl. evening meal)!

I hope this doesn't put people off! Where did you read/hear this?

nzshar · 10/02/2006 16:55

yeah right ok in order to get that for a full time child (50hrs pw) then you would have to be charging £10 an hour. I think £5ph is the most i have seen. Most of us charge considerably less.

katymac · 10/02/2006 18:06

It was on the BBC Local news last night

  • hope they put that right and apologise!
mapleleaf · 10/02/2006 18:37

I believe it. Several childminders i have rung in the last month have quoted me £8 per hour. In fact the cheapest i have been quoted is £6 p/h. In parts of Kensington or Chelsea the rate must be higher.

Tinker · 10/02/2006 18:37

I think it said that they found one (or maybe a few) who charged that, not that it was the norm

Tinker · 10/02/2006 18:39

The trust's research reveals that for the first time the most expensive childminders cost even more than nurseries, with some childminders in London and the South East charging £500 a week per child.

Even for central London, however, the figure is untypical.

The average cost there is a more affordable £163 a week, ahead of the average for Great Britain of £130 a week.

I'm at some childminders fees - I charge £3.50 an hour which is normal in my area however some people think that's too much!

DayCareTrust Press Release

Looks as though information was supplied by Children's Information Service (150 out of 200 responded).
Strange thing is, I recently enquired about childminders in my local area - got a list from CIS - 25 minders on the list, only ONE gave an indication of cost.

If that's typical, then CIS only know the fees charged by 4% of childminders - hardly a figure that is representative, is it?

ThePrisoner · 10/02/2006 21:40

Most of the childminders I know don't tell the CIS what their rate is!

ayla99 · 11/02/2006 09:30

Although I have told the CIS my fees they haven't put this info on their website. Probably because I charge different rates depending on the circumstances (between £3.40 for full-time care to £4.00 for occasional hours).

I can't imagine anyone charging £10 per hour for one child except maybe at 4 am on a bank holiday!

Maybe somewhere somebody was asked to do a week like this:

Mon-Sat 6am-6pm
(6-8 am at double fees = 10 hoursx8 = £80)
8-6 at £4 = 50 * 4 = £200
Sat at double fees = 12 * 8 = £96
6 x breakfast £1.20 =7.20
6 x lunch £1.50 - £9
6 x dinner £1.75 = £10.50
2 overnights at £50 = £100

Grand (but very untypical) TOTAL: £502.70 !!

goldenoldie · 11/02/2006 09:59

Round here (central/north Ldn) childminders charge £5 - £6ph per child. So if they have three children for three/fours days they can easily make £500 per week.

I use a NNEB nanny - it's cheaper.

Tan1959 · 11/02/2006 15:47

Goldenoldie - childminders charge a set rate for 'each' child because they have a set amount of spaces/vacancies available.

You say that you use an NNEB nanny because it is cheaper - is that because you have more than 1 child?

badgerhead · 11/02/2006 16:06

The NCMA have responded to this report look on their website for their response, try this

badgerhead · 11/02/2006 16:07

sorry link doesn't seem to be working website is

HellyBelly · 11/02/2006 16:07

This news report is suggesting £500 per week per child which makes a big difference. All I can think is if they are really charging that much per child, they must be offering one to one care or something?

HellyBelly · 11/02/2006 16:10

where badgerhead?

motherinferior · 11/02/2006 16:13

The Daycare Trust's figures are based on research, not claims. If you look at the figures, it is very clear that those are one or two reported exceptions, and that the other averages are considerably lower.

HellyBelly · 11/02/2006 16:13

it's ok, found it! thanks for that

nannynick · 11/02/2006 16:33

South East
Childminder for child under 2 years: £165
Childminder for child 2 and over: £160

Highest Childminder Cost: £500

Would love to know, Which Childminder is currently charging £500 per week, as clearly it way above average - suspect it could even be a computer error!
