An e-mail to a nanny

Hi,
I'm a nanny and have recently asked my employer about my payslips. He hasn't given me any since the beginning of the year. I got an e-mail instead:

'Your employer has requested for an account to be created for you within the
Members Area of our websites: www.nannytax.co.uk and www.stafftax.co.uk.
This enables you to view or download your payslips, and advise us of any
changes to your personal details.'

When I started the job I was given regular payslips from nannytax, then my employer decided to print out the payslips himself and they didn't look so nice anymore. Now it seems that I have to take care of my payslips myself.
What do you think about it?

That isn't how I interpret it at all. It is an e version of Payslip so you log in and get info there (and print it out) rather than having it sent or emailed to you. This is not unusual (my employer does it) - its just like using online banking rather than paper statements.

And what do you mean payslips doesn't look so nice? If It has the right details on does it matter?

Nothing here makes me think your employer isn't withholding tax or doing payslips - just using a different method to do it.

Gigondas · 22/04/2012 11:04

And if I am honest and someone complained to me about this I would think either you were being a bit slow or a bit precious

DilysPrice · 22/04/2012 11:07

Your employer doesn't sound particularly friendly or helpful in his communications but there's nothing wrong with using an outsourced online system to handle tax issues.

bettina46 · 22/04/2012 11:18

Thank you Gigondas, if you say it is not unusual, I will not complain. However I will need my payslips when I decide to apply for bank credit and I'm not sure if my bank accepts funny-looking printed out pieces of paper.

This is bog-standard, bettina, don't worry.

Nannytax used to only send out printed payslips. Which looked nice but might get lost in the post. Then they did a "backup" copy online for employers to print out if it got lost in the post, because reordering another copy was a PITA for everyone.

Then they realised that the "backup" copy cost them less, and so told employers they were putting up their payroll prices for anyone who still wanted paper copies. So many employers switched to printing off the "backup" copy online. It doesn't look as official, but it is EXACTLY the same thing, it just hasn't gone via a printing company.

Then they realised it was a bit eco-unfriendly for employers to be printing off all these payslips (in fact, we never did, as soon as they let me have the online ones I just emailed a copy to my employee). So the new idea is that they give the employee a login to the system and they can download their own payslips. But again, it's EXACTLY the same info as the old paper payslip you used to get, produced by the same people. Actually, this system is better for you because you don't need to wait till the end of the month to confirm what your pay should be, they usually upload to the system around the 20th of the month. So if you might have a funny amount (eg overtime needs including, or if you had sick leave) then you can check in advance that it is right and ask for adjustments if it isn't and get it all sorted out before the end of the month so you get paid the correct amount.

Actually, it sounds pretty brilliant to me.

My only criticism is that it would have been nice to know, verbally from employer, this was ging to happen.

In the UK is it normal - please don't worry about it :)

I doubt your employer is going to change anytime soon, especially for 'the nanny'. How is your job other than this? Are you enjoying it?

bettina46 · 22/04/2012 11:53

Thank you so much :) r3dh3d Your message explains everything nicely.
Am I enjoying the job? It's been 2 years since I started working for the family and I've got mixed feelings. It's hard to change job when you love the child/children.

My boss used to print my pay slips

arial font on a piece of A4 paper...

I have to say it never crossed my mind that they didnt "look nice"....why would i want to look at them? other than to see the figures, which were there crystal clear!
I just filed them into a ring binder where i kept them.

I would find it very odd to complain about the look of a pay slip, and would have no problem printing them myself if i ever needed them...

in 10 years only ever needed twice for my mortgage / maternity allowance

The others have just sat there.... a complete waste of paper really...

I am an employer who use nanny tax. As you mention the payslips used to be all pretty and pink but now they are pretty much doing everything online. I had to start printing off our nanny's payslips a few months ago and our nanny can have her own log in to print it off herself. If anything you are getting more transparency as you can see yourself your account with nanny tax and see the tax etc.
