I'm gobsmacked Shock

The course I did three years ago, advanced paediatric, has shot up to £85!!

There's no way I can afford it this year with a baby due in 12 weeks Sad

What to do?

You should pay if a cm it's a business expense, you could ask your council ours sometimes subsidise them so they're about £20.

lisad123 · 13/04/2012 08:16

You should, it's for your business and you can't run without it.

McPhee · 13/04/2012 08:17

Sorry, I'm a nanny. I should have said Blush

Still try your council my friend is a nanny and she got the reduced rate, worth a try?

McPhee · 13/04/2012 08:20

Thank you I'll give them a call. I didn't even know they might be a point of contact.

Why does everything have to run out at once! Hmm

My borough doesn't charge childminders for their advanced paediatric first aid courses, but charge £100 for those outside the borough/non childminders/nursery workers et al. Worth a call?

HSMM · 13/04/2012 09:23

My last one was about £80 too

Blondeshavemorefun · 13/04/2012 09:30

as a professional nanny you should make sure that your crb/first aid etc is up to date, so friad you should pay for it

saying that though i have the one day course which if i were to be oftsed apparently doesnt suit it, so if a parent wants me to be registered i think they should pay the difference of the one and 2 day course

nannynick · 13/04/2012 09:33

You should, even as a nanny. It's part of your CPD (Continuing Professional Development) and is also a requirement of registration if you are part of that scheme.

If you are in England and you are Ofsted Registered, then contact your council early years department and find out about any funding that might be available. They so sometimes offer it but it does seem to only be available at certain times of the year. Look for: Training Bursary / Workforce Development Fund.
In Surrey we have Workforce Development Fund but as of September this year it won't provide funding for First Aid. Next funding panel in Surrey meets in June, so that is the last opportunity to get funding for First Aid if you are in Surrey... big IF there as I don't know where you are. However felt it worth mentioning as other local authorities may also be stopping the funding for First Aid courses.

sunnyshine · 13/04/2012 09:34

Ours is £115 but you used to be able to get a grant of some sort to help.

nannynick · 13/04/2012 09:40

Blondes - Ofsted only says that Childminders have to do the 12 hour course. Shorter courses for nannies are accepted - the course must be approved by the local authority. See Guide to Registration, Jan 2012

There is no set minimum length of time for a first aid course for the Childcare Register. Many standard courses take 12 hours to complete. It may be possible for you to undertake, or arrange for others to undertake an intensive course in less than 12 hours. However, you must ensure that the course covers all of the criteria specified below and has adequate practical training.

Im in the same position! £90 plus 2 days off work for it... but I have to because they need me to be ofsted registered plus I think Ive forgotten everything I've learnt and would never forgive myself if I just didnt bother.
Thanks for the advice about funding though

McPhee · 13/04/2012 09:54

I won't be able to easily get time off work to get it done, plus I go on maternity leave in 6 weeks. My only option is a couple of weekends

My insurance is also due at the end of June Shock

OP posts:
blapbird · 13/04/2012 09:57

I know it sounds awful, but I would just leave it until you get back off maternity leave whats the worst that could happen?

McPhee · 13/04/2012 09:59

I think the problem is that if I let it go without renewing, then I'll have to start the whole process again Confused

Is that right Nick?

OP posts:
nannynick · 13/04/2012 10:02

For many years I've had to do it as weekend courses... typical over two Saturdays. Cost in my area is currently £95+VAT and I didn't know about the grant possibility... and now I do, it probably won't exist come the time I next renew.

It can be worth shopping around for courses, as you don't have to do a 12 hour course, as I wrote earlier, so you may find a course that involves just one day. Also location can make a difference - doing a course whilst visiting some relatives in another part of the country may mean that the course costs a lot less. Some of the larger training companies like St.John Ambulance let you search for courses nationwide.

Yes, insurance and first aid are probably due around the same time as you probably got them both around the same time a few years back, if you went through the Ofsted registration process.

nannynick · 13/04/2012 10:12

If you let the Ofsted registration lapse, then there could be problems. However if you are not caring for children for a period of time, you don't need to have Insurance and First Aid during that time period.

From Appendix A of Guide to Registration
"As part of an application, you must declare that you have met the first aid requirements and provide us with a copy of the certificate. If you are a childminder or home childcarer this must be your own certificate.

When we inspect providers to check that the requirements are being met, the inspector will expect to see the first aid certificates of the relevant member(s) of staff (those who are caring for children and have first aid certificate(s) at that point)."

If an inspection visit occurs and First Aid certificate is not valid, then it is given as an Action on the inspection outcome.

06/03/2012 The inspector found that you were not meeting all of the Requirements for the Childcare Register . The inspector discussed the reason(s) for this during the visit.
We have therefore imposed the following actions:
ACTIONS
The following actions are to be completed by the date shown
obtain a relevant first aid qualification (Welfare of children being cared for) 27/03/2012
You must complete the action(s) by the date shown
nannynick · 13/04/2012 10:18

If you get selected for inspection and you are not caring for children, then the inspector may well still give the Action. You could object on grounds that children are not being cared for at that time but I don't know if Ofsted would accept that, though a Tribunal might. Chances of you being selected for inspection however are probably quite low (didn't you say that you have been inspected fairly recently?).

If I were you, I would:
Renew Ofsted Registration.
Book a First Aid course for a time before you would start back at work.
Contact insurer to enquire about if the policy needs to be cancelled during the period you are not working, or if it can be frozen during that period. Plus find out how easy it is to restart insurance again once you know when you would be caring for children again.

McPhee · 13/04/2012 10:30

Nick, thank you. You're a star!

it's all starting to feel a bit clearer in my very hormonal muddled head now Grin

Do check around as various training providers seem to charge very differing prices. In West Sussex, I was able to identify 6 different companies charging everything from £65 to £115 - you can imagine the one I picked! There was also a choice of evenings and weekends courses.

bbcessex · 14/04/2012 13:19

Hi there.

My previous nanny came to interview as already Ofsted registered.. for her it was a selling and negotiating point. I then had nothing to do with her registration or any costs relating to Ofsted or renewal.

My new nanny didn't have Ofsted and I want her to, so I paid for her first aid course (£70), which she did over 2 Sundays prior to starting with me. I am also paying for her other costs associated with Ofsted registration.

Good luck..- I remember the slightest thing being a bit of a mountain before having my two!
