Registering a nanny for childcare vouchers

Has anyone done this?

We are looking at employing a qualified experienced nanny - I am guessing she has all she needs to be 'registered' and we will pay the fee, but I can't find out how to do it..who to apply to etc.

Most if the information about the registration is on that site. It can take anything from 8 weeks upwards from interview to actually being registered. I know because i did it all last year and now i have to renew it again. It is £96 a year and in order for the families i work for to be able to carry on using vouchers i have to re-register.

Thank you - I've downloaded the form, and she's got the qualifications - Have I read it right - there is a face-to-face interview as well as sending off the application?

Jura you are right there - the interview as far as i can tell is a waste of time. All they do is get you to fill in form and photocopy qualifications and first aid certificate.

The biggest problem I found with the interview was the location and timing - both were inconvenient and the venue was totally unacceptable, no access for a buggy, no access if disabled etc. With luck they have changed procedures now - espeically now that the Disability Discrimination Act places requirements on businesses to provide access.

You will need to plan for your nanny having time off during the week day, to attend the interview. Taking children with them could be tricky - why oh why didn't they just use the Job Centre!

My employer is unable to benefit from the voucher scheme, as both parents are teachers. So for me it was a bit of a waste of time. Renewal coming up soon... not sure I'll bother.

How long does the process take?
I sent my application form on 28 March 2005. Childcare Approval Scheme called on 30 March to make an appointment for me to attend an interview (not really an interview, it's just form filling). Interview was on 20 April. The CRB issued Enhanced Disclosure on 12 May. Childcare Approval Scheme sent approval letter on 16 May, I got this on 17 May.
So, Start date was 28 March, complete date 17 May. Total days: 50

As my employer is unable to benefit from the scheme, I have yet to deal with the vouchers themselves. However childminders I know have mixed views regarding the vouchers - some of the voucher providers are good, others bad. Paying childcare providers is important, so it isn't good when some companies takes weeks to process the voucher redemption, while others take only a couple of days. So a bit of pot luck when it comes to redeaming Childcare Vouchers depending on which provider your employer is using (they can do it in-house).

PS. I am interested in hearing from anyone who has experienced difficulties with accessing the service provided by Nestor Primecare Services. In particular I would like to hear from nannies who found that the 'interview' was not arranged locally to them (say a travel distance of over 10 miles), where access to the premises would have been impossible if you had a baby and toddler with you - i.e could you fit a double buggy through the door? Plus if the Childcare Approval Scheme would not schedule an appointment which was convienent for YOU, I'm still surprised they don't appear to provide the service at weekends, or in the evening so that nannies can attend after work.

Childminders get a home visit for their Registration - why don't nannies?

As of April 2006, the CRB are increasing their fees - from £34 to £36 for an Enhanced Level Check.

No info as yet regarding if the Childcare Approval Scheme will increase their fees - hope not, with their current £62 admin charge, they can surely absorb the rise.

Wow, thanks for all your info Nannynick, my nanny-to-be has her own 5 month old baby so it will be very annoying if the interview is hard to get to and/or buggy impossible!

I had to travel to Birmingham as my nearest place - which is a good 25 miles away. The place i went to had narrow doorway in and a narrow staircase up 2 floors and i am almost certain there was no lift. So when i go to re-register i will have to go on my day off.
