What do you do with after school mindees?

Have only looked after preschool so far but have a mum visiting tonight about her 9yo.

Just looking for ideas, I would assume that after a day in school he won't be wanting a full timetable of activities as he will be tired but I feel bad taking the same ££ I do for toddlers who have my full attention all day.

By the time we walk home from school and have a snack/drink I will only have him a hour so was thinking of letting him choose whether he wants to do arts/crafts but also letting him out to play with the other children in the street (quiet area and only with mums permission) and we also have the wii/tv etc.

I will be doing the big adventure park every so often but it's a fair drive so not even a weekly thing.

What do after school parents expect?

Also do you still fill out daily diaries for a child this age you only see for a few hours a day?

Rest snack a bit of teletime, start a project eg story map, papier
Mache

If.you let him out to play you must stay with him/be in eyeshot
/within hearing range

I only do diaries for children that fall within the EYFS. From end of Reception Yr I stop doing them.

I have a 12 year old who plays out you need mums permission, I had a malicious complaint about it and ofsted checked my paperwork but as he was over 8 it was fine as mum had given written permission.

I only have after schoolies, They are 5,6,7,10.
I have something crafty or drawing, project etc in the dining room.
Board games or T.V in the lounge or now the nicer weather is soon to be here..lol we spend half an hour or so after school at the park then head home.

I have a dungeon, with a barred, locked door... Grin

No, seriously, I do give them an evening meal and they choose what they want to do: they can watch tv, play in the garden, sometimes we go to the park, sometimes they do an activity or craft.
I used to get them to do their homework, but one of the parents insists on overseeing -doing- -it- -for- -him- at home Wink

Lego popular, play dough, wrestlers and ring, board games, some of the kids the same age range as my kids some younger.

Thank you for the ideas everyone. I'm still new to all this (although loving it and feel like I am doing well) I just want to make sure I am providing everything I possibly can.

What kind of daily info (if any) do you keep on your older children?

I was thinking of doing somekind of "scrapbook" for all pictures/photos etc to go into?

Why not get them to do it? Give them their own diary to keep and they can decide what goes in it.

HSMM · 04/04/2012 21:00

I'm with Tanith's dungeon. What you need is some nice stout rope and gags Grin

Anyway ... I have happily given up after schoolies now, but I used to find giving them a good run and a good feed was a necessity after school.

HSMM · 04/04/2012 21:01

I still write brief notes (inc pics) for the school children in the holidays, but I suppose they could write their own ...

Grin @ Tanith and HSMM
Yep, food/snack and a drink after school, works wonders..
