Should I be concerned about food at CM's?

DS is 14 months, been going to CM for about 3months. 2 sessions a week, has 2 lunches there and one evening meal.

CM is kind enough to provide daily diary of activities and food eaten. DS seems very happy there. They have plenty of days out etc.

Just recently though his diet there leaves me a little uncomfortable. For example, yesterday for his lunch, he had chips from the chip shop (they were out and about at park/ducks) and an ice cream. He had curry for tea (which is obviously ok), biscuit and yoghurt.

Now, i'll hold my hands up and admit he is my first baby so I know i'm probably more uptight watchful of his diet than I will be with any subsequent children. But really, chips?? as a meal?? I note the absence of any fruit or veg (I know potatoes are veg Wink).

Part of me thinks that it will help him feel happier at the CM if this food is reserved for when he's with her, and it's only twice a week.

Be nice to hear other's thoughts....

DH and I were at the park with our mindees this week. We normally take a full packed lunch, but this week we had chicken cucumber and cheese in our cool bag and added a portion of chips, which the 6 children shared. Unfortunately our local country park doesn't let CMs buy ice creams Grin.

I wouldnt be bothered bout this if it's once in a blue moon. My childminder takes my DD (although admitedly she is 5) to McDonalds - everything in modderation.
The only reason I may be sligtly annoyed is that once it's happened, DD has used up her junk food quota for a few weeks and Mummy has to be the boring food giver. Would rather she ate healthly there so I could take her to maccyD's Grin
But yes, she was probably at the park and didnt want to leave - she could have been better organised and taken something packed but if it's a rarity then cut her some slack.

Yes - it was the first time he's had chips. I tried oven chips once and he was so disinterested I was pleased never bothered again.
The posters that have commented about how the CM has used up the 'treat quota' have hit the nail on the head really. I feel compelled to give very healthy things and leave the 'treats' to her.
I think, also, that this is just how the CM has raised her children and how she has nannied previously so really doesn't see anything worng in it. Makes me feel more uptight about it grating on me.
I think I have left it too late to say anything now, but he is going there again today...and the sun is out....so I will see what is served for lunch today....

I think that this is pretty off, OP.

I may give older children a good quality ice cream/homemade ice cream occasionally if I had checked with their parents first, but I would NEVER give any of my mindees chips or biscuits, especially if they were only with me twice a week.

Ooh do come back and tell us macca (nosey)

Maccapaccawacca · 26/03/2012 21:03

Only there for lunch today - I said when I droppped himoff that he had had aot of treats over the weekend, which was a lie and therefore, wouls she mind not giving him any rubbish today.
He had pasta and sauce for lunch, yoghurt and grapes. I didn't pry as to what kind of sauce Wink

hopefully homemade veggie/tom sauce :)

redglow · 26/03/2012 22:56

Maybe it was curry sauce from the chippy.

YANBU. You should have the pleasure of giving your Ds treats, not the childminder. As a one off it's fine, but otherwise not on, and I think she should let you know beforehand. Eg. On Tuesday we will be going to the park if the weathers nice. Is it ok if I get your Ds an ice cream or chips as a treat. If she's not checking beforehand I'd expect her to take a healthy packed lunch for the kids.

Perhaps she's genuinely uninspired where menus are concerned and so it seems like she isn't making much effort. You'll know yourself from her food diaries if the chips are a one-off?

My CM seems to always give pasta every single lunchtime. I don't get in a tiz as it's only two lunchtime meals and I make sure my daughter has a decent hot meal for tea.
