So girls and guys, what do you wear to the initial interview at the agency? My grandma was all for me wearing a suit, but I'm not so sure! Was going to go for dress, blazer, leggings and boots but not sure if its a bit casual? I literally don't know what to expect, so any advice is welcomed!

I've only had one, but would always wear a suit. I even wore one to my (successful) interview to be a youth worker where even the big boss was in jeans!

Maybe suit and casual top would work for you?

letsgoflyakite · 20/03/2012 16:41

Ohh, so maybe I should do a suit then? Arghh... I hate suits. And my suit isn't even an actual suit, more like smart grey or black trousers and a suit jacket. With a blouse.

H&M have some nice office type stuff at the moment. And a nice fitted tshirt underneath is a bit more comfortable than a shirt ime but just as smart. The jacket only has to be worn until you shake hands, then you're wearing a t shirt and trousers/skirt like normal Wink

A suit really??? Ive never worn a suit to agency interviews nor interviews with families just smart trousers and a blouse.

nanny20011 · 20/03/2012 16:56

Hi I'm the same have never worn a suit to an agency or family interview and would never think to either. I've been to many family interviews and agency interviews and have had no problems with them wanting me on their books. I have usually worn something along the lines of leggings boots blazer/smart jacket that sort of thing and a nice top. Obviously you can't turn up there in jeans and trainers but think a suit may be a bit to formal in my opnion.

letsgoflyakite · 20/03/2012 16:58

I'm kinda on the same wavelenth nanny20011... I think it is a bit formal!

Obviously don't want to give the wrong impression, but it is in a central London office with no children, so smart is probably the way forward, but I really don't want to have to wear a suit unless it will be expected of me!!

I have never worn a suit and am registered with lots of london agencies! Smart trousers, nice top and suit jacket will be fine. Or nice dress with leggings, boots and suit jacket will be fine too. Ime you want to look smart as the agency base the opinion they pass onto families if you from that first interview, but I do think a suit would be a bit overkill unless you are a super formal person!

I would find a nanny in a suit a bit odd if she came to my house.. I want her to get down with my children.. Would far rather her come in relevant work attire..

callaird · 20/03/2012 20:26

I have never worn a suit to any interview, agency or employer.

I do wear (new, clean, smart) jeans and clean dark trainers. A nice top and cardigan. An employer is employing me on my relevant experience not my dress sense! Of course I would not turn up in ripped jeans and boob tube but I wear what I would wear to work, tidy but casual.

I have never been told that I haven't got the job because I wore jeans and trainers! (I have only not been offered two jobs that I interviewed for, one I didn't want anyway and the other I was offered after their first (more local, Spanish speaker) let them down.
