wonder if i could have some advise. am thinking about opening a facebook account just for existing clients. i could keep them updated of their childfrens days via my (just purchased :) ) iphone, tag them to know where we are on outings, let them see photos give any news etc. I would still do their daily diaries. what are your thoughts?

I'd have no problems with it as long as the other parents didn't mind other parents seeing information about the other children... Also as long as it was private.. I had my Dd's old CM on fb and our relationship drastically went down hill when she split from her husband and started partying all day and all night and putting it on fb..

HSMM · 16/03/2012 11:24

Could work in theory, but facebook are notorious for changing their settings all the time and you would have to be really careful to make sure the information wasn't open to 'other people' to see.

HSMM · 16/03/2012 11:25

You could maybe set up a closed group for clients?

Jnice · 16/03/2012 11:26

I wouldn't be happy with a childminder using FB when they should be taking care of my kids.

At ds's daycare the staff are not allowed to use any cell or smartphone in the centre.

stonep · 16/03/2012 11:46

It would be purely for business, not a social thing, I already have fecebook and would never befriend a client!! I don't intent to sit on it all day it would be a place where parents could if they had time drop in and out of to see what the children are up to, mainly for example so and so is at the park. Photos could be added. When clients left my setting they would no longer be allowed to access the fb pages

seems like a fab idea but why not just text them a photo to their phones, I wouldnt be able to access facebook at work alot of business block social networking sites and unless they access it on their phone in a lunch break then they wouldnt see it anyway.

LingDiLong · 16/03/2012 12:37

Hm. I don't see why it wouldn't be worth a try. A quick check in and the odd status update surely wouldn't make parents think you spend all day on there.

Maybe ask your parents whether they would like it? It would be quite nice for them to see in real time what their kids are up to.

PaulaMummyKnowsBest · 16/03/2012 14:02

i wouldn't do it

I am pretty sure that once you upload a photo to FB it becomes their property

catepilarr · 16/03/2012 14:14

i suppose its not a bad idea but i wouldnt use facebook. as already said, it changes its settings all the time, other people can sometimes get accesss to photos, if someone who they are friends with 'like' the photo. or you can just copy the address of a photo and that address will work for everyone, incl people outside of facebook. plus facebook seems to store photos after you delete them. not very safe imho /i dont post photos of people, icnl. myself on my facebook anymore./

stonep · 16/03/2012 15:30

If you Mark the photo for specific people their friend etc can't see them even if they have ticked like. In privacy you can customise security settings to make it as secure as possible. Think I will have a word with clients and c what they think.

MediumOrchid · 16/03/2012 15:41

I think it's a really good idea, I'd definitely like this if it were my child. However, all your clients would have to agree to it for it to work. Otherwise you'd have to make sure that one child was never in any pictures.

stonep · 16/03/2012 16:33

Oh certainly I would ask and do a policy to cover it all. Will see what response I get, would certainly save paperwork lol

Get a private, invite only blog. Facebook is too full of privacy issues and people need an account to access it. Or a Flickr group. You can use flickit app to upload to Flickr from your iPhone.

Tanith · 16/03/2012 17:17

Dame Clare Ticknell, in her review of the EYFS, says she does not recommend that mobile phones should be banned from settings.

A setting that does ban them therefore seems to me to be indulging in a knee-jerk over-reaction rather like some settings ban cuddles and limit physical contact.

BoysAreLikeDogs · 16/03/2012 17:19

no I wouldn't

FB own the pics you put up

txt pics if you want to to the parents

I find the pogo printer brilliant - take the pic, bluetooth to printer, stick into diary, sorted

stonep · 16/03/2012 17:37

Will look
Into private blogs thanks

I'm in Canada. They have a different attitude here. They have no screens at all in the daycare and staff can use the center's phone or their cell on their break.

It's an open setting. I can and do walk in at any time. I like it. If my son saw someone's iPhone he would pester them for angry birds!

ChitChatFlyingby · 16/03/2012 17:53

I wouldn't want Facebook or a blog TBH. I find the whole idea offputting actually, and wouldn't use a CM who did this. Photos added to a diary, emailed etc would be far more preferable.

Rollergirl1 · 16/03/2012 20:12

Why don't you get something like Baby's Days? You can upload photos and write online diaries for your mindees and it's all completely private per family. I would be a bit unsure about Facebook to be honest.

sillymillysmummy · 16/03/2012 22:07

I do all of my diarys and some other stuff directly from my iPhone. I use notemaster. I have a template set up that I put photos etc straight into and email them at the end of the day. I also upload any extra pics I have taken to private folders in Dropbox which only they have access too, again directly from iphone. Simples Wink

Tanith · 17/03/2012 10:44

Jnice, oh I see! Yes, it's a bit different here and, as millysmummy says, a lot of us use our phones for records and diaries - I can't remember the last time I actually talked to someone on mine Grin

I haven't tried Dropbox, though. I shall have to take a look - sounds good!

stonep · 17/03/2012 16:32

Think notemaster could be great thank you

There are a couple of apps that would do what you're planning to use Facebook for.

Search Daycare on the apps store and have a browse to see which you like. I agree that note master sounds good, too.
