How far in advance should I contact a childminder

I'm only 4 months pregnant at the minute so guessing this is probably waaay too early but we had a childminder recommended who happens to live only a few doors down from us (although we have never met them).

Obviously this would be very handy and as they have been recommended it sounds a perfect place to use but not sure how far in advance I should contact them.

This is my first baby so new I'm new to everything!!

No harm in contacting them now. I've met up with parents when the baby hasn't been born and it's not a problem. The only problem is she won't be able to guarantee a space until the baby has arrived as we're not allowed to do that. But you never know, she may have a space which is coming up around the time you need it so it's worth a chat if you're really keen on this one :)

I'd start looking at least 6-8 months in advance of when you think you're going to want to use them, good minders round here are often booked that far if they have spaces available.

I started looking about 4 months in advance before I was due back to work. I saw about 6 child minders which does take time so advance is always best. Just bear in mind that if you see one you love they wouldn't be able to guarantee a place so far in advance but a few I saw offered a retaining/deposit fee. Good luck and see as many as you can. Found it great taking the baby with me So you could see how they both reacted to each other Smile

I've had people come before the baby is born and other people who came the week before care started. No harm in looking around now,so you know what to expect.

Just as a note, NCMA advises childminders not to take deposits or sign contracts with parents until baby is actually born, so you could find one you really like now who is unable to accept your custom at the moment.

I probably wouldn't agree to see a parent regarding a space until they'd had the baby :)

Quite right Flisspaps (and Looney), the parents who came to see me before their baby was born had to wait until after the baby was here before signing contracts and paying deposits.
