Does anyone not use Nannytax?

I am employing a nanny, probably on a temporary basis, as my job is likely to end in October. I was planning to use nannytax to do wages etc, however, when I called them they said it is around £180 for a six month subscription. This works out at about £30 per wage slip, so I was wondering if anyone manages without? How tricky is it to work out tax and NI? Also, apart from letting HMRC know I am employing someone and making sure house insurance covers accidents at work, should I be doing anything else?

There are many cheaper alternatives to NannyTax - search here or google.

Some specialise in temps and will do a monthly rate although most of the work is in the year end returns so don't expect to pay 1/12 of an annual fee per month.

You can do it yourself but there is a bit of a learning curve and I wouldn't recommend it to save yourself £100 for six months payroll (note that you will have to provide a pay slip showing deductions each month/week and the system HMRC provide to calculate the deductions doesn't produce pay slips). Most payroll agents also provide an employment contract which you would otherwise have to buy or find elsewhere.

paye for nannies is better

themymble · 23/02/2012 15:17

thanks both. Mranchovy, I have written a contract myself - is this not enough? I have checked what I must legally provide in terms of sickness pay and maternity etc...

I don't know I haven't seen it Grin but if you are reasonably confident drafting legal agreements and have started from a relevant precedent it could be fine.

Have you covered everything here?

I use Nannypaye, there are around £169 per year, and they have been great

chandellina · 24/02/2012 12:14

i use PAYE for Nannies and am a happy customer. The other family we share our nanny with do it themselves but I am happy to pay £115 or whatever it is per year to avoid the hassle.

culturemulcher · 24/02/2012 12:32

I used Nanny Wage here.

They seem like a small company (always the same woman who answers the phone) but they're super-efficient and very helpful. I think they charge £115 per year - and the rate includes writing contracts, etc as well.

Thetokengirl · 24/02/2012 12:35

I use Way2paye. I can't remembered exactly how much it costs, but it's less than you were quoted.

It is very, very easy to do yourself, I've always found HMRC helpful and I use this company
www.thepayrollsite.co.uk, to print wage slips etc.
Your contract as long as its been signed and is not completely unfair to the other party is likely to be fine.
Its very easy to work out NI and Tax as long as you have an agreed gross salary. NI tables are on the HMRC website, when you register as an employer they will send or talk you through it all.
If you don't know the gross salary you can work it out on mr anchovys calculator.
The first couple of months are a bit daunting, but if you perserve its fine.

I use NannyMattery, they're fab.

taxing nannies

NannyTreeSally · 27/02/2012 23:17

Try Claire at Zest Payroll (formerly nanny numbers) - she's very affordable... no set up fee and PAYG!

iluvkids · 28/02/2012 13:01

I second the Zest Payroll suggestion

Great for nannies taking on temp roles - as their employers probably wont want to pay 100's just for a temp placement

With Zest, it is £15 a month

taxnanny are about half the price of nannytax and have been very straightforward and reliable for me.
I now pay my nanny a different amount every month (depending on how many weeks of term time or holidays) and they are happy to be notified of the amount and turn around the payslips in 24 hours, sometimes less, even on a sunday!! Well worth the money compared to time spent on HMRC etc (and I even understand most of payroll and do it for the company I work for).
