CM - Full and Half Day Charges

I am thinking introducing Full and Half day payments for any new parents. Half day would be 8am-1pm and full day 8am-6pm. So no more hourly payments.

Do any childminders already do this and does it work well?
Would be interested in hearing from those who think it is a good idea and those who think it is a bad idea.

I do full day payments. Works great for me. I don't do half days at all.

where are you based HSMM and are you full?

What do you do about school aged children? Do they pay per session?

Do you charge a retainer in the holidays?

At the moment, I charge as and when needed and don't charge retainers for holiday care . Just wondering if that is the norm?

Based in Berkshire.

Full of under 5s. Never has been a lot of call for school children where I am. I work 0800-1800 and when I do school runs, I charge 0800-0900 and 1500-1800 at a slightly higher rate, because I hate doing school runs, they use up petrol and the children always eat the entire contents of the fridge. The school children that come school holidays only pay the same daily rate as the younger children.

I don't charge a retainer in the holidays, because I tend to have holiday only children, rather than term time only children.

I think some CMs charge retainers in holidays and others don't. Depends if you want to work really.

I had a parent who came to me for mornings only once and when she realised that I charge a daily rate (hadn't read website, or emails), she thought that was great, because she could work the morning, pop off for a quiet lunch, do her shopping, doctors appointments, etc child free and then pick up whenever she was ready. Others who only want short hours say it is too expensive for the hours they want.

The reason why I prefer not to do half days is because we are out and about a lot and I don't want to be tied to having to be home at lunchtime (although we do come home if a parent wants a late drop off/early pick up occasionally).

I just found when I charged by the hour, parents would gradually cut back their hours and I was left with a lower income and no way to fill the gaps of odd half hours here and there. I now charge for my availability and I'm available Mon-Fri 0800-1800, so that's what I charge.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for the reply HSMM. I am finding that with the 8:30 starts and 5pm pick up you can be out of pocket quite a bit, I would make an extra 58 per week if I charged for a full day. I work 8am-6pm anyway for one child so seems silly to loose that money when you are open anyway. I felt a bit bad when I charge a new parent with my new system.

I make it very clear what I am offering to new parents, so there is no upset when hours change, or anything else. All my new parents have been absolutely fine about it. I am a bit of a softie, so I didn't change existing children onto the new daily rate and I still have 2 children on hourly payments (2 years after making the change). One of them has cut their hours back to 0900-1500, so I lose out 4 hrs a day money on this one, but hey ho ... I put it down to good customer relations.

My DH always equates it to booking a hotel room. You pay for the whole night, even if you only use the room for 2 hrs Grin.

I only offer full days, because I only take one under-5 mindee and can't afford to do odds and sods of hours here and there. If you're upfront about what you're looking for then parents know what the deal is before they come to see you.

MUM2BLESS · 24/02/2012 22:36

I do per hour. Before and after school. Nursery run and also fulll days. Find this okay.

Justanotherday · 24/02/2012 23:17

I only do full days 8am -6pm and am full. I am not too interested in the after school ones but I do one evening from pick up to 6pm £25 including dinner. Am based in Berkshire
